Hunter's widow blogs about this new documentary. Sounds interesting and supposedly promises previously unseen footage. I also like that its focus appears to be on HST's early life/career.

Yeah, that's a good one. Have you seen Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride? I caught it on Starz awhile back. It's pretty fluffy but an affectionate tribute from a lot of celeb friends nonetheless.

I've seen it. It was interesting to see Bill Murray and Johnny Depp talk about the other's performance in either Where The Buffalo Roam and Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas.

It is really good. Dives a bit deeper than usual into a few key points in HST's life. It also doesn't candy coat his cantankerous nature and the effect it had on those around him. There are some really great interviews as well, including Pat Buchanan and some really wonderful stuff with his first wife. It is a love letter, but an honest one at least. I love HST and I was glad to have seen it, I just wish that I could've stayed after the film when it played here at AFI Dallas to watch and maybe participate in the Q & A with Mr Gibney

Got around to watching this tonight and thought it was good, if somewhat poorly made. I'm not a fan of Thompson per se, and only knew the major highlights of his career. Certainly Gibney goes deep, but the film is riddled with too many odd musical choices, an almost embarrassing amount of montages and extra footage and oddly, not much in the way of a compelling narrative despite the subject. It honestly took me about forty minutes before I got into the film. I could've done without the footage of Johnny Depp's reading Thompson's work in some kind of a shrine setting. Interesting but hampered by Gibney's off the cuff approach (I guess his own gonzo style?).
