I thought Forty Shades of Blue was really impressive, and one of the best understated American films of the last few years. Although judgment should be reserved, this looks pretty middle-of-the-road. Anybody seen it yet?

Yeah. It is. I haven't seen his previous work, but I've heard it's very good. This is well acted but ultimately flaccid.

Oh well. Do check out Forty Shades though, as Sachs draws out some superb peformances from a fine cast without descending into frivolity (a comparison to Cassavetes probably wouldn't be too far off the mark). If you need further convincing, here's Michael Atkinson's excellent review from The Village Voice.
