I'm a fan of The Believer... but Noise was the only film that I walked out of at the Los Angeles AFI festival last year.

From the 40 or so minutes I watched, it is most definitely unbelievably stupid, and a big disappointment.

I saw this tonite. This is the worst sort of way to defend a film, but if you haven't experienced a noise obsession, then yeah, this film must be pretty hard to accept. But as someone who has spent the last year at the mercy of noisy neighbors, it's uncanny to me how accurate Bean's "farfetched" depiction of Robbins' deterioration is. I don't even need to look up Bean to see if this film's autobiographical to some extent, because no one who hasn't experienced this kind of gradual hypersensitivity to noise could get so many aspects right-- not just in Robbins, but in how others respond to his objections. And yeah, obviously the symbolic nature of his obsession is apparent (and very Freshman Comp), but this film is such a lovely bit of wish fulfillment for those who've suffered similar fates that it's impossible for me to not embrace it. Also, coming so close to the Dark Knight, it's interesting to see a film that so haphazardly embraces and rewards the vigilante.
