Donnie Darko Sequel Starts Filming May 18

Screen Daily reports that UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko, billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights for the $10 million-budgeted film.

Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct.

Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets) and Justin Chatwin (Dragonball).

The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.

The project starts shooting May 18.

I loved Donnie Darko, but this just sounds god-awful. If Richard gets deeply involved, even if he directs it, I wouldn't buy a ticket.

Donnie Darko is, in my opinion, one of the very best films of recent years (and one of the very, very few 'teen oriented' films that I would still consider a classic & a personal favourite)

Having said that, I have absolutely zero interest in seeing this 'sequel'

The only thing more irritating would be a Fight Club sequel.

It's sooooo cool to hate Donnie Darko.

It's also soooo uncool to try to profit on its popularity by making a sequel that can't possibly make thematic sense. What, are we going to delve into the life-before-its-eyes of the poor jet engine?

I liked Donnie Darko when I first saw it, but the fanclub have really ruined any aspect of it for me.

"Duude, wasn't it like, so deep? Like, man, what if, man, you were like, back in time, and like, man, it was so deep."

It's certainly not an awful film by any means, but man, these people went over the cliff with it.

I enjoyed Donnie Darko, but it's become like Fight Club or Quentin Tarantino where it has this fanbase that regard it as the greatest thing ever made by human beings.

However, this sequel sounds like something awful, something straight-to-DVD awful

That would explain why I still like it (and a lot of popular movies) I've been able to avoid the whole 'fan-club' aspect.

I've managed to avoid all that too, thankfully, though I've heard quite a few comments as to the existence of that particular breed of fan. I think Donnie Darko is a lovely little film, particularly the 'Head Over Heels' sequence, but this sequel sounds like an abomination.

With a lot of "cult" movies, I'll ignore the bandwagon telling me how great it is, and judge it by my own standards. Donnie Darko was no exception. One of the things that is rarely mentioned when anyone talks about it is how it's able to pull off great humor in two scenes (the cut from the classroom to the principal's office, and the seminar), despite being an overly darkly mysterious film. I think the sequel will lose that aspect of the first film (something rather predictable with sequels), and focus on the other-worldly elements.

Donnie Darko is one of my favorite films, but any type of sequel like this is completely unnecessary. I don't understand how they're even allowed to do it rights-wise. I hope this doesn't actually get made.

Donnie Darko is a nice little film - one of the few "indie smashes" of recent years to live up to the praise.

I don't like the sound of this sequel. Sounds like another "Neverending Story 3" to me...

Yep, same here - one of my favourite films but no desire to see a sequel. I had friends that thought it was the worst film ever, I lent it to parents who hated it (though no surprise there, really!) but I thought it was great!

I'd not say it's one of the best films of all time, but certainly not one of the worst. It may not be the type of thing all people would like, but it is quite well done. So while it annoys some to have people say it's the best film ever, it does annoy me when people say it was one of the worst.

Oh my. They're recycling Frank the giant rabbit and the countdown to destruction theme, neither of which will make any sense beyond the confines of the original story.

I'll keep my pleasant memories of the real deal, thank you very much.

They are also recycling the Abyss-thingy, which was probably in the trailer more than Donnie Darko itself.
