Directed By Brad Anderson
Written By Brad Anderson and Stephen Gevedon
Plot: Tensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.
This film is possibly the best atmospheric horror film since "The Shining." Don't be fooled by IMDb, it is extremely well written and worth the watch. If you have seen it, I would like to hear some opinions.
It's definitely an homage to THE SHINING at times. I remember liking it quite a bit, much like a lot of Anderson's work. And it's got a decent performance by David Caruso.
I'll also vouch for Caruso's performance here. Actually, it's Peter Mullan who loses the plot a bit towards the end in what is an otherwise tightly controlled piece.
As to other Caruso performances, I thought he was excellent in the first season of NYPD Blue, and decent in Schroeder's Kiss of Death. Been a while since I've seen either, though.
The stunning sound design is what really sealed the deal for me on this movie, which I wish I'd seen in a theater. One of the few things I've seen to actually make me a bit scared as an adult, and definitely recommended for horror buffs.
One of the few great and truly scary horror movies of the last decade. Yes, it does owe a debt to The Shining, but the location (the real-life, now sadly destroyed Danvers State Hospital just outside of Boston) is even more creepy than the Overlook Hotel, and Anderson utilizes it brilliantly. Glad to see there are some fans of this film on this board, as it never got the attention it so richly deserved.
