Hamlet 2 (Andrew Fleming, 2008)

Though he has made a Nancy Drew movie in the interim, I really liked Dick, Fleming's take on Watergate.

Hamlet 2 stars Steve Coogan and Catherine Keener, and is "reintroducing" Elisabeth Shue.

The red-band trailer surely contains the first contender for "Best Original Song" at next year's Oscars.

I maintain that even as good as All the President's Men is, Dick is the best movie ever made about Watergate/Nixon.

I saw a preview screening of this and it was pretty good but not spectacular. It's funny, sincere and enjoyable, if fairly forgettable. Steve Coogan does his best Jim Carey impression to mostly positive results. What surprised me the most was the hoodrat kids that make up Coogan's class were actually fairly well-drawn, funny, unique and realistic. I really expected them to resemble the kids from the ridiculous Stand and Deliver.

Lets be honest with ourselves. This film looks like another piece of trash from Flemming, who is not a good director as it is. I don't know how you would rank Dick over All The President's Men. I find the comparison easy, one is damn good, the other is piss poor. Simple as that.

This is not a film, it is a movie, and looks like another crude "Team America" romp that will probably win at the Academy Awards because The Academy SUCKS!

Unless of course you thought Crash deserved Best Picture, what a tear jerker *sarcasm*

Read the thread, someone commented on how the original song might be up for the nomination, not surprising.

Ah, I get it now - when you suggested a double bill of those two and mentioned Dick, I originally thought you were referring to this!

I was being facetious when I suggested that "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" was a sure bet for a nomination. The closest they have ever come to something like that was when South Park's "Blame Canada" got a nod.

Having a go at the Academy's frequently maudlin and populist proclivities is fine, but Hamlet 2 is completely outside of their wheelhouse. Any noms for this film would be considered a very left field choice.

I'm very convinced that it could happen. Considering "It's Hard Out There For A Pimp" won a few years back, I don't think this is too far fetched.

The youth say "sick" now when they mean "cool." It's like how "bad" used to mean "good." Or "swingin' on the flippity-flop" used to mean "hanging out."

"It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" came from a very well-received drama, Hustle & Flow which was also up for Best Actor. Hamlet 2 is receiving largely mixed reviews. I think it needed Borat-level acclaim for the song to even be considered.
