"Ah, the children!" Brings back memories of the early '80s when Danny Maughon co-wrote and directed a Pythonesque comedy show for Atlanta's Public Access Channel. One of the skits I assisted with was a rather good sketch called "Bad Italian Movie" which managed to hit the bases with plot/style points from well known films/directors. It was no "La Dolce Gilda" but more scattershot like the one from SCTV with Joe Flaherty playing a horny Giancarlo Giannini type. At the end of each segment a character would exclaim (bad post sync, natch) with wistful nostalgia, "Ah, the children!" as we see a cut to a scurvy lot of dirty SHOESHINE/CABIRIA type urchins.

It appears one of my favorite films is now listed as out of print on the Criterion site. Any news of a re-issue?--not that one is needed.

Bizarre. I'd say it means either a reissue (like Traffic) or a full-fledged re-release.

Considering this is one of the best films in collection.I'd wager re-release blu-ray. [-o<

If Walkabout, which we know is getting a reissue soon, isn't listed as out of print then why would Nights of Cabiria be? It could be a mistake or the Criterion might really be out of print (which would be strange since it's a Rialto title).

So, you are saying that they took this out of print for an exclusive blu-ray release? They don't want people with standard DVD players to own it?

I don't think that's what he meant at all.

Not at all.I just hope this doesn't go O.O.P. A Blu-ray release would be nice. That's all.

Just wondering if I should pick this up now, or is it likely to get re-issued, ala Amarcord's brilliant re-release. If it is Rialto, who else would pick this up and release it in region 1?

Reissued titles have never to my knowledge gone "out of print" before the reissue was announced. Wait for confirmation from Criterion at least of either it going out of print or a reissue

If Rialto licensed it from Canal...it could be in Lionsgate's hands now. Isn't that why Criteron wasn't able to release Diva?

I thought Wages of Fear went OOP before the reissue was announced.

A response from John Mulvaney to a member on .com :
Hi Joe,
Indiscretion and Grey Gardens are a glitch that we're aware of, and working to fix! Nights of Cabiria, however, has gone out of print. I hope this information is helpful, and thanks for writing in!
Best,
JM

Almost certainly reissue. It seems a bit scattershot how they do this, but I remember some reissues (Third Man) going out of print for short time before coming back out. Others (High and Low) just blast right out the gate unannounced.

For what it's worth (probably not much), the email from Mulvaney I received had the usual "To the best of my knowledge there are no current plans for a rerelease of this title" comment.

He said that about High and Low a few months before its re-release was announced.

Question for those who know a lot more about Criterion or other companies re-releasing a film like Nights of Cabiria, should I buy this version now, or wait for another possible release?

I'd say buy it now and then if they re-release it you can sell it for a high price on eBay or Amazon marketplace.

Hi *****,

This title has gone out of print unfortunately, and to the best of my knowledge we have no current plans for a rerelease. I hope this information is useful, and please let me know if you have other questions!

Sincerely,

Jon Mulvaney

It is a Studio Canal title, so it's probably the same situation as the last batch that suddenly went OOP.
