Martini Movies from Sony

I just saw some of these covers in the flesh, so to speak, and came back to make some quips about how ridiculous they are, but I see I can't top any of the wiseacres who beat me to it. Unbelievable. Sony had better keep releasing some worthwhile obscurities in this line to make up for my having to look at these atrocities.

If I recall correctly, the noirs will be in sets in the "Collector's Choice" series (like the Boetticher set). At least that was the context mentioned for The Black Book. I guess they could also release more noirs in the Martini line too.

Oh, horror - these terrible covers will be back. Other titles released on February 3 besides Five and Our Man in Havana are Getting Straight, Gumshoe and Vibes.

Burl seems to be making the case for the whole booze theme. Somebody in marketing must be getting defensive.

Still, it's a rare and eclectic group of movies that I never thought I'd see on DVD, so good for Sony.

The first-wave titles are currently on sale for $11.07 at DD. I was considering Garment Jungle but I've decided to pass on all of them.

Five = "5ive"? That's just sad. I'm continuing to pass on all of these, partly just on principle (especially at a $20 SRP). I'll rent a few, including Our Man in Havana -- good to have that one available finally.



..."5ive," really, for a 1951 film? I'm still in a state of disbelief. Is this the kind of desperation companies like this have been driven to by the worsening consumer market?
I hope Warner releases 6R33D soon (that I would buy).

Sony's Martini Movies presentation of Our Man in Havana looks great in widescreen...The two "martini" themed mini-featurettes are harmless.

FWIW, saw four of these at my local grocery store for 9.99 apiece yesterday. (King Soopers) The covers don't quite look so bad when you actually see them.

(Only have one of this "series" so far, Getting Straight. Watched a good chunk of it one night and it looked great. (But have to admit it seemed a bit more dated than last time I watched it many years ago).)

So far I've got "Our Man in Havana," "Getting Straight," "Gumshoe," "Dollars," "The Anderson Tapes," and "The New Centurions." I certainly hope Sony doesn't back out of releasing their third wave because I'm dying to get "Enter Laughing," "The Comic," "Husbands," and "I Never Sang for My Father" as well.
