Very nice to see a contemporary Austrian film in the Criterion Collection.

The current Mulvaney, in an email to me, wrote:We do plan to release WINGS OF DESIRE, PARIS, TEXAS and ALICE IN THE CITIES in the not-so-distant future, but specific dates haven't been scheduled at this time.
We already knew about Wings and Paris, but it's great to see Alice confirmed as well.

Fox Home Video did release on dvd "Paris,Texas" back in 2004 with a nice transfer and some good extras. It would be nice if Criterion will release more movies that need a new transfer like Truffaut's "Two English Girls" or "The Last Metro" or Kurosawa's "Dersu Uzala".....all of them that were released on Criterion's laserdisc awhile ago.

Paris Texas is out of print, Criterion putting it back in print ruins your argument

There was no argument on my part, did not know it was out of print so quickly.

Nice to know that Wings of Desire is being released by Criterion. I can sell the MGM copy I have right now, since it is fetching a high price in the secondary market.

I recieved a sort of weird reply from Mulvaney.

I asked him what the chances were of seeing the Sir Ridley Scott movies Black Rain and 1492 : Conquest of Paradise on Criterion.

He replied : We don't have plans for "Black Rain" at this time, thanks for your email.

So does that imply that they do have the rights to Conquest of Paradise? I dunno. It certainly is a much requestd MIA Paramount title.

The news about Wenders' films is very exciting indeed. Too bad they are not releasing Kings of the Road, which, as far as I understand, has no R1 edition at all so far...

Maybe they didn't want to dignify it with a response.

Some were obvious here, but another confirmation by UCLA's Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive showing a few classics credited to Janus/Criterion:

Violence at Noon (Oshima)
Intentions of Murder (Imamura)
Naked Island (Shindo)
The Moment of Truth (Rosi)

What is UCLA's art museum? Are you referring to UCLA's archive screenings at their theatre in the Hammer Museum? (I'm not being pedantic, I'm asking because I want to attend but I don't see these on the calendar.) Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion. I believe its the PFA (Pacific Film Archive) Theater at Berkeley.

hello, I just received an email from Mulvaney.

I asked if Criterion was releasing Jeanne Dielman in the future (this is all I asked) he responded:
Hi there,
Yes, we plan to release "Jeanne Dielman" on DVD. I hope this helps!
Best,

JM

Well, the news about Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas is probably more exciting if you don't already own the MGM discs, since those editions are both good enough that I won't be tempted to double-dip.

What makes you so sure? The extras haven't even been revealed yet by Criterion.

Because the only extra that *might* justify spending another $40-50 to me would be another film of interest, ala Blood of the Beasts on the Eyes Without a Face release or the Stahl version of Magnificent Obsession. Extras of that magnitude are rare. My #1 concern when purchasing a DVD is the quality of the actual film and its print -- that's the main course. Extras are just that -- extras. I buy Criterions because they release lots of great films in great prints, but when there are cheaper versions that I own or are available with comparable quality prints, as is the case with the Wenders films, a new commentary or documentary on tertiary material that I probably won't watch more than once do not justify to me (if they do for you, then great) forking over the dough. I don't have that kind of money to throw around.

I pretty much agree with Bete Noire -- the last MGM release of Wings Of Desire was fantastic all around. Great transfer and extras and there is very little - if anything - that would tempt me to double dip. Maybe if Criterion releases the film in BD, that might sway me, but I honestly doubt it.

I intend to base my decision entirely on the quality of the cover art.

The documentary Gedächtnis: Ein Film für Curt Bois und Bernhard Minetti should be included on Wings of Desire. I can think of few other reasons to re-release the film, than to include such a fascinating sounding film, and certainly no better opportunity to release it.

I'd be surprised if they didn't. I'm guessing that BD releases were their main reasons for acquiring Wings and Paris; they're both gorgeously shot films, and neither would be high on MGM or Fox's lists for BD release.

I meant I doubt I'll double dip, but yeah, it's pretty much a no brainer they'll go hi-def with those releases.

I agree with Bete Noire too, but the way I see it is that I can sell the MGM version right now for a profit high enough that I could repurchased it later on at a lower price when the Criterion version is released. I do think Criterion is going to release it on Blu Ray/
