Can anyone tell me how the (reportedly) horrible R1 holds up to the (I can't find reviews of this anywhere) Panorama R3 of this film? It's pretty cheap, strange that no one has brought it up yet (unless I'm searching incorrectly, and in that case I apologize).

I also couldn't find anything about Panorama's Princess Goh. I just want to know if it's decent and worth $13.

I have never seen the R1 Rikyu, but the Panorama version is passable. It is not Criterion quality mind you, and the subs are sometimes difficult to decipher, but this is a great film that is worth the purchase. However, if you can wait, I would conjecture that Rikyu may end up as a Masters of Cinema release, which would certainly be of higher quality.

I wouldn't recommend Princess Goh, as a film, I believe it doesn't measure up to the rest of Teshigahara's work.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably end up getting the Panorama as it could be a while before another company gets to it.

FWIW, the R1 is abysmal and not OAR. I haven't seen the Panorama, but I hear it's OAR at least.

[MoC won't be issuing RIKYU in the next few years, at least.]

I'd recommend the Panorama Rikyu, just got a copy today. The subtitles are decent, and the colors inoffensive... but if anyone is driven insane by edge enhancement leave it alone entirely. It suffers from this (though I found it easy to ignore, it was still very much so there). Worth $13 I'd say though, and from what I hear a vast improvement over the R1. Probably the best out there for a while.

Two posts from the Outcast Cinema blog about an interviews for an upcoming release of Rikyu (and Basara: The Princess Goh) by BCI/Eclipse. The first is about the interview with Rentaro Mikuni and the second is on the interview with producer Hiroaki Fujii.

Wow, I didn't even know the latter existed; excellent news. Now if we can just get Summer Soldiers and The Ruined Map in decent, English-friendly editions...

Hands down, my favorite Criterion release of the year was the Teshigahara box set. Thanks for sharing.

BCI Eclipse is not Criterion's Eclipse.

I was inferring speculation for release on Eclipse of those two titles. My scatterbrained posts need reviewing.

BCI Eclipse is no more, so the Teshigahara films might not be forthcoming after all, depending on what Navarre decides to do with them.
