Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
When I was doing the math didn't get anywhere near 145... maybe it was a 30% coupon at the time, oh well.
Amazon copy arrived today okay (thanks to the shipping box it comes with from the factory, which was shipped in one of Amazon's big boxes).
A little wear and tear on the bookholder thingies (rubbed surfaces, tops creased somewhat. And the first disk I took out, a dual sided disk, was scratched on one of the sides (wasn't paying attn about whether it was the side facing out or the side facing in); will probably play okay like the Ford @ Fox disks did (still a few of those to watch, but the worst ones played fine). No loose disks, or tears in the holders, box was in fine shape (vs the copies at Costco, each of which had their very own unique smoosh).
For me, although one disk is not really a good metric, looks like similar story to Ford @ Fox box (and about what I expected wrt the scratched disks and the stupid cardboard disk holders). Will see how the rest end up looking before I figure out what to do with this particular copy.

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
Several customers at amazon report of "a packaging debacle", one of them mentioning a non-playable "Seventh Heaven". Sorry to bring down all the enthusiasm (mine included), but this sounds at least as bad as 'Ford at Fox'. I'm not sure whether I should be happy because I didn't pre-order this set (have to wait until after Christmas, anyway) or cry because of the way Fox again seems to have mishandled one of their best releases ever in such a way. At least I envy you guys who can pick the set up in a store and might check it before you buy.

Just so happens that's the "first disk I took out, a dual sided disk" I was referring to. Haven't tried to play mine yet though. And yes the "Seventh Heaven" side is the one with the scratches... Hmmmm. [Haven't looked at the other disks yet.]Tommaso wrote:Several customers at amazon report of "a packaging debacle", one of them mentioning a non-playable "Seventh Heaven". Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
I just saw a post by LaserMovies at dvdtalk and he posted a new 25% off coupon for Barnes and Noble members. The code is "H4B7Y7C" and it brings the set down to $147 and change after taxes in Florida... Now might be the time to bite. If only I waited a few more days I would have saved $10...
Oh, well. Hopefully this helps someone. The coupon expires on the 18th.

I just paid $120 ($136 after tax) at Costco for it. It's quite an intimidating box. I think I'm afraid to open it.

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
Picked this up at Costco as well ($130 after tax here). I'm just amazed they even carry it, much less have it at that price (for this week only). Can't wait to start going through it all.

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
They had the Ford box for about the same price back when. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a copy (or two) when I could have.
EDIT:
I'd be happy to make some surrogate purchases of this set at Costco here (no sales tax) for any members wanting it at cost+shipping.

Amazing that the deals keep getting better and better! And it also makes me regret it even more. Could have saved nearly $30 or more. Yikes.
But from the looks and sound of it, the set seems worth it at any price.

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
Being seemingly more careful with removing the remaining discs, a few more were scratched up to various degrees (so I'm thinking the first disk I took out was scratched before I removed it), a couple quite significantly (gouges rather than scratches). So, although perhaps somewhat of an improvement over the Fox packaging, I'd say still a mess.

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
When I bought the Ford set from Barnes and Noble last year it came with a cracked Young Mr. Lincoln disc. I contacted Fox and they told me to contact Barnes and Noble. Barnes and Noble told me to ship the set back to them. I decided not to because all the other discs were fine and I was worried that maybe next time there would be more casualties. Ended up buying the Criterion.fdm wrote:Being seemingly more careful with removing the remaining discs, a few more were scratched up to various degrees (so I'm thinking the first disk I took out was scratched before I removed it), a couple quite significantly (gouges rather than scratches). Of course, you really cannot do that with any disc here.

My local Costco (Houston) didn't have it! Damn, I was practically waving my $120 around ready to surrender it. Oh well, I'll have to check a couple of the mid-Atlantic locations where I'll be in a day or two.......if I'm really lucky, the Delaware one (no sales tax!!).

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
Only 1 of the 3 Costco stores I went to had it. Yesterday it was still marked 180, and I was quoted the same price when I asked about it. Don't know if it would have rung up cheaper.unclehulot wrote:My local Costco (Houston) didn't have it! Damn, I was practically waving my $120 around ready to surrender it. Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
The local Costco in Chicago had several copies of this set sitting on its shelves, but also with the $179.99 price tag. I grabbed a manager and asked if they could price match what the other national stores were doing (such as Seattle), and he claimed that the Midwest has a different pricing tier than the south, east and west - and said [-X !
Cannot understand why a corporate chain like Costco (similar to Walmart) would have such a pricing variation (25% off vs. 50% off) in two bigger cities (Seattle/Chicago).
Even as tempting as this set is to own, coupled with the avoidance of discs getting loose during shipment from a place like Amazon, I still could not bring myself to pay $60 more for the convenience, not the way this economy is, and considering that I purchased the Ford Box set from the exact same Costco location exactly a year ago FOR HALF PRICE!
Oh well!

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
Did you just try and take it to a register and see what it rang up as? Probably that's where you see the discount. Meanwhile, I'm grousing because 2 different locations near me didn't have it, and the stock number is SHARED by two other sets, so you can't call and verify that it's IN stock. It's not offered online either. So screw you, Costco!Wittsdream wrote:The local Costco in Chicago had several copies of this set sitting on its shelves, but also with the $179.99 price tag. Saw my first Borzage last night- Street Angel. Glorious stuff. I was on the verge of scoffing at the suped-up melodrama until the very last, when the ending unexpectedly shook me deeply. My only complaint was that Borgaze could have used a good editor in a few scenes that went on too long.

Not a Barnes & Noble member, but used the 25% off emailed coupon [P4X8X3H]. Regular price $191.99; after discount $143.99 (would've been $130 if I were a B&N member). Free shipping (no sales tax to Oregon).Se7en082 wrote:Just a heads up to anybody who wants the set. I have been checking before and after this set came out for the best price. Today, Barnes and Noble lowered the price to 20% off for members. That plus their 15% off coupon and the 10% visa link, it came out to a total of a little over $157. The killer was the $10+ tax to Florida, but what the heck.
If Deep Discount runs the 25% or even 20% off, that should be the best price next year. But for the impatient ones...
Today (December 18) is last day for coupon; it's good only on a single item.
Very excited to have this baby in my hot, sweaty hands (I think I'll wear gloves).

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
I hope your set arrives in good condition. Mine arrived with no scratched discs! Ironically, one of the discs somehow managed to get out of it's slipcase thingy and was in the middle of one of the pages. And again, no scratches! The only thing my set had was a slight dent at the bottom of the box. I would imagine someone dropped it or something and that sent the disc flying.FilmFanSea wrote:Not a Barnes & Noble member, but used the 25% off emailed coupon [P4X8X3H]. But no troubles on my end! Unlike having that Young Mr. Lincoln disc absolutely cracked on my Ford set.

Wow, today's mail was so big, we actually got it in a sack! What do you think is in it, Oskar?

Ooh, it's Daddy's Borzage & Murnau DVDs! Look at Daddy's silly smile -- he seems really happy. This is actually great stuff for an old-movie buff like you, Oskar. Remember when you and Daddy watched Red-Headed Woman and The Love Parade earlier this week? Well, this could be even better!

The cat looks happy too. What a nice box; the size is just perfect. Hey cat, it's not a litter box, OK?

Re: Murnau, Borzage and Fox
I just placed an order for the set through DVDEmpire last night. I paid something like $190 for it, knowing full well that I could have purchased it much cheaper elsewhere. However, in my experience with vendors shipping to Scandinavia from the States, Empire has always consistently packaged things more carefully than anyone else. No price is too great for this set, as far as I am concerned, and I would like to do my best to receive it in as good condition as possible. That said, it looks like Barnes & Noble do a very nice job, eh Ola!? Sweet little photo-essay!
