PGA, WGA and DGA nominations for Dark Knight. Looks like another populace win this year, and I think it's easier to swallow than say Gladiator. I'm all for it if it wins. (Hopefully Mickey Rourke wins, too.)

Re: Awards Season 2008
That wacky directors branch always seems to have a surprise every year (Jason Reitman last year). I say this year it's Mike Leigh and he takes Ron Howard's spot. I also wouldn't be surprised if Darren Aronofsky takes Fincher's spot. Just a hunch.Jeff wrote:There's a first time for everything: Barmy's right.Barmy wrote:It's OVER.lacritfan wrote:Directors Guild noms

Re: Awards Season 2008
While I certainly give Howard a lot more credit than a lot of people here, it would be a shame to leave out the directors of Wall-e or The Wrestler. Fincher seems like a lock though.

Re: Awards Season 2008
I see Mike Leigh replacing Nolan. The Wrestler in general will get snubbed in this category since Fox Searchlight is really campaigning for Danny Boyle.

Re: Awards Season 2008
I like Mike Leigh replacing Howard. No one is replacing Nolan, he would have gotten that sole director-not-picture slot if The Dark Knight weren't being nominated for Best Picture (which it looks like it is).

Darren is NOT getting a nom. Leigh is NOT getting a nom. Clint IS getting Nolan's nom. (But Batman still gets a Pic nom.) Remember, actors make up the bulk of the Academy. Actors are lukewarm toward Batman and want to reward Clint for his last acting role. End of discussion.

Re: Awards Season 2008
Right. At the nomination stage, the fact that most academy members are actors doesn't really matter for any category except best picture. Everyone only votes on nominations for their own category/categories--actors in the acting categories, directors for best director, writers for the screenplay categories, etc. The one exception is best picture, where everyone in the academy gets a say in the nomination.exte wrote:So then they nominate him best actor.Barmy wrote:Darren is NOT getting a nom. When it comes time to vote for the awards themselves, then everyone gets a vote in every category, so that's the point when considerations like "actors will want to reward one of their own for best director" comes into play.

God, Tom O'Neill isn't even trying anymore over at the Gold Derby. Australia is the ninth most likely film for Best Picture in what universe? When are the nominations announced?

Reached for comment, Tom O'Neill said of Hawkins, "Who? The British girl? Oh you must mean Kate Winslet. What? Well, she'll never beat out Jolie in the Changeling."
