At least she isn't as bloated as the fanfare for Slumdog.
Also is Milk's Oscar chances officially DOA. If so that sucks, at least Elfman deserves a win.

I would say no, a lot can happen in six weeks. Also the Globes have been off lately, the previous four winners were Atonement, Babel, Brokeback Mountain and The Aviator...

Per Anne Thompson - "...strangely, Jessica Lange looked younger than her co-presenter and co-star in the upcoming Grey Gardens, Drew Barrymore."

Geez, that guy is kind of all over the place. What's he upset about? Kate Winslet winning? Emotion? Holocaust movies?

Maybe he's Barmy.

Are there any Awards shows that actually matter? (Other than this Forum's Awards, that is.)

Depends on what you mean by "matter." The Oscars are certainly useful from a marketing perspective. I don't think winning an Oscar helps anyone get their next film made anymore, though.

Critically, then. Sight And Sound? Which lists do CriOrgians, in general, truly benefit from at the end of each year?

Yes, thank you for that Domino. Now, as the season winds down, could we perhaps summarize which Awards Lists/Shows matter the most.

Are you suggesting, to quote the Critic, award shows where award shows win awards?

There's a vast world of difference between awards shows and critics' lists. So much difference, in fact, that your question probably belongs in another thread. No awards show matters, period. For the latter, I, for one, have always found the Village Voice's year-end poll to be very useful. It's essentially the same concept as the Sight and Sound poll, but with twice as many lists.

Metacritic does a good job of tracking top 10 lists, but they don't collate them. There was a site that used to do that extensively, but I don't think it exists any longer.

Thanks, Matt.

There are several "lists" in this Awards Season thread. Some have been revered, and others rediculed. (sic). :) I do get a vague sense of the organizations that win CriOrg respect, and those that merely entertain. I was wondering if we could focus on that a little more.

I'll find the appropriate thread.

MovieCityNews and CriticsTop10 are good places to look for collated top 10 lists.

There's also They Shoot Pictures' list of the best films from the 21st century. You can surmise what the most critically lauded films were based on which films were added to the list this year. (A couple of these aren't really from this year though.)

01 Flight of the Red Balloon (Hou)
02 A Christmas Tale (Desplechin)
03 Wendy and Lucy (Reichardt)
04 WALL-E (Stanton)
05 Still Life (Zhang)
06 My Winnipeg (Maddin)
07 Paranoid Park (Van Sant)
08 Happy-Go-Lucky (Leigh)
09 Waltz With Bashir (Folman)
10 Silent Light (Reygadas)
11 Synecdoche, New York (Kaufman)
12 Let the Right One In (Alfredson)
13 In the City of Sylvia (Guerin)
14 The Lives of Others (Von Donnersmarck)
15 Rachel Getting Married (Demme)
16 Hunger (McQueen)
17 Milk (Van Sant)
18 The Wrestler (Aronofsky)
19 Howl's Moving Castle (Miyazaki)
20 The Duchess of Langeais (Rivette)
21 The Edge of Heaven (Akin)
22 Man on Wire (Marsh)
23 Ballast (Hammer)
24 Woman on the Beach (Hong)
25 Reprise (Trier)
26 Che (Soderbergh)
27 Chunhyang (Im)

It probably doesn't exist yet, but if discussion gets rolling here, we can spin it off. You'll get a good sense of who's respected and who's not from this thread.

Iowa Film Critics pick "Slumdog Millionaire"

Steve Woodhouse

The Iowa Film Critics Association wrapped its 2008 voting last week and Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” took home the top prize.

“Slumdog Millionaire” tells the tale about a pair of orphans in Mumbai. One of the brothers falls in love with a beautiful girl and goes to great lengths to reach her and run away with her.

The film also won the Golden Globe in the best picture drama category days after the IFCA made its announcement. Boyle was honored by the IFCA, receiving its Best Director award.

Other winners in IFCA’s 2008 voting were Mickey Rourke, named Best Actor. Rourke plays a washed up showman who tries to enter a normal life in “The Wrestler.” Rourke’s strong performance helped propel “The Wrestler” to an award unique to the IFCA, Best Picture Yet to Open in Iowa.

Meryl Streep took home the Best Actress honors from the IFCA for the suspicious and mean Sister Aloyicius in “Doubt.” Taking home Best Supporting Acttress honors was Penelope Cruz for her performance in “Vicky Christina Barcelona.”

The late Heath Ledger, who took a character last portrayed onscreen by Jack Nicholson and made it his own, was named Best Supporting Actor. Ledger’s performance as The Joker in “The Dark Knight” won the praise of many of IFCA’s members.

Last but not least, the IFCA named “Wall-E” as the Best Animated Film of 2008. The film tells the story about a lonely robot who helps save the Earth, and humanity.

The members of the IFCA review films for various media outlets in the state.
It's OVER.
