Re: Awards Season 2008
Here are my Oscar Predictions. I arrived at these choices very easily: I simply asked myself, "What would be the least-surprising win in each category?" I guess we'll see how I do:
Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Director: Boyle
Actor: Penn
Actress: Winslet
Sup Actor: Ledger
Sup Actress: Cruz

Re: Awards Season 2008
I'm not sure about Penn. If Milk doesn't win anything else then maybe he'll be the consolation prize. The nagging thing in my mind is that he won in the same category only five years ago. Only Spencer Tracy and Tom Hanks have won two Best Actor trophies in that time span and both were in consecutive years. The other two-time winners in that category (Fredric March, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis) generally waited at least a decade.

The host of the party that I am attending has already put me on warning from complaining through Slumdog's victory.

Re: Awards Season 2008
The all important Golden Razzie winners are announced. Nothing really surprising: The Love Guru for worst film and actor, Paris Hilton for worst actress and supporting actress, Uwe Boll for worst director, Indiana Jones for worst sequel and Pierce Brosnan for worst supporting actor.
(While good choices, I personally think it fails to represent the full range of horrific and awful films inflicted on us this year, from films that would make Uwe Boll blush to the current pretentious Oscar bait films being decided between tonight!)

Boll's a lazy, lazy choice that's nothing more than fanboy pandering.colinr0380 wrote:(While good choices, I personally think it fails to represent the full range of horrific and awful films inflicted on us this year, from films that would make Uwe Boll blush to the current pretentious Oscar bait films being decided between tonight!)
I reviewed Bloodrayn 2 a little while ago and while the film has evidence of some truly terrible creative decisions, it still has a shape, some moments of tension and an identifiable style. In fact, compared to some of the acting and the utterly horrific script ("I'm Irish Mick!"), the direction and cinematography are the best bits of it.
EDIT : Speaking of which, aren't the Razzies supposed to be about pricking the pomposity of Hollywood? if so, what is the point of giving awards to safe targets like Hilton and Boll? that's not attacking Hollywood pomposity, that's supporting it by suggesting that the people who don't and would never get awards and absolutely terrible.

I'm sincere when I say this: I thought The Love Guru was very silly, but still very funny.
"If you're Uncle Jack helped you off an elephant, would you help your Uncle Jack off an elephant?"
It's funny.

Re: Awards Season 2008
After this opening bomb-session by an apparently coked-up Jackman, I think it's safe to predict that this will be the worst Oscars ever. He's making jokes that aren't funny, jokes that are in awful taste, and jokes like the one about the way Pitt is dressed that don't make a lick of sense. And this group presenter thing is a disaster.
Whoopi Goldberg looks like an overstuffed seatcover.
JUST LIST THE NOMINEES! ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE THE SHOW RUN LONGER?!

And where are the clips of the nominees--the only reason this thing is on?

Jackman was making fun of himself. He mentioned being named sexiest man of the year, but should have taken fashion advise from Pitt.mfunk9786 wrote:and jokes like the one about the way Pitt is dressed that don't make a lick of sense.
But, yes, after the disappointing list of nominees this year, the show was bound to be uneventful.

Dustin Lance Black's speech is a reminder why Milk should win Best Picture. It's astonishing to me that any of the other nominees stand a chance to beat it. But one will. Sigh.
Ladies and gentlemen, here are a bunch of animated movies that aren't nominated!

I was really hoping to see Waltz with Bashir sandwiched between Madagascar 2 and Space Chimps. What a missed opportunity.mfunk9786 wrote:Ladies and gentlemen, here are a bunch of animated movies that aren't nominated!

Only one will beat it--and that's the undeserved winner of Best Adapted Screenplay.mfunk9786 wrote:Dustin Lance Black's speech is a reminder why Milk should win Best Picture. It's astonishing to me that any of the other nominees stand a chance to beat it. But one will. Sigh.
Bashir's a foreign Film nominee--not a real movie.geoffcowgill wrote:I was really hoping to see Waltz with Bashir sandwiched between Madagascar 2 and Space Chimps. What a missed opportunity.mfunk9786 wrote:Ladies and gentlemen, here are a bunch of animated movies that aren't nominated!

Too true. Outside maybe actor, the only other one it has a real chance of winning, Milk should but won't sweep. Damm, that whistle trick earns Van Sant the win as it was the most creative shot of the year. Oh well. One win is better then none.Fiery Angel wrote:Only one will beat it--and that's the undeserved winner of Best Adapted Screenplay.mfunk9786 wrote:Dustin Lance Black's speech is a reminder why Milk should win Best Picture. So, the producers don't let Peter Gabriel perform his entire song but they let Beyonce and High School Musical kids do this crap?
