So Studio Canal would also not plan to re-release this? Either way I was looking at getting this for Christmas.

I don't know why you wouldn't be able to still get it, it'll be a bit before it's completely gone.psufootball07 wrote:So Studio Canal would also not plan to re-release this? Either way I was looking at getting this for Christmas.

Optimum, the UK wing of Studio Canal has Nights of Cabiria down for release on March 02, 2009.psufootball07 wrote:So Studio Canal would also not plan to re-release this? Either way I was looking at getting this for Christmas.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
How will that work for R1 in terms of a release? Could Criterion still rerelease it like they did Port of Shadows after discontinuing it and saying they wouldn't have it again?broadwayrock wrote:Optimum, the UK wing of Studio Canal has Nights of Cabiria down for release on March 02, 2009.psufootball07 wrote:So Studio Canal would also not plan to re-release this? Additionally, are any of these companies remastering it, or just releasing a copy of the print Criterion used originally?

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
The print that CC used was from Rialto / Canal + Image. As for the transfer itself, the digital videotape of the old transfer was, I believe, in standard definition. I doubt any new editions coming out would be sourced from a non HD pass.
But, even if the Canal release did use the old transfer used for the CC, I believe that transfer was run in Paris and supervised by Canal personell. CC may have helped finance it (thus the very peripheral sounding 'additional telecine supervision' by Lee Kline), but since it's not a classical Janus film (not part of their library of theatrical exposition) I doubt they had the reels in their own posession and could have run exclusive telecine... which they could in turn license to others. I think Canal has been controlling the home vid rights to this title for Rialto... kind of like how Transit Films controls the primary global home vid licenses-- and licenses regional sub-rights market by market-- on behalf of the Murnau Foundation.

So, snatch this up? or will CC release it again in 6 months? When Port of Shadows went out of print, I got the same email from CC/Jon saying they lost the rights and it was going OOP, only to find out 6 months later CC released it again.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
I'd buy it. Who even knows when a reissue might come, if it comes? Or if it'll fall into the hole other Canal films fell into (Quai de Orfevres..)
Too beautiful a film to mess around taking chances of not seeing.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
Buying this now is a no brainer. Amazon still has it in stock for $24.99. Even if both of these unlikely events occur:aox wrote:So, snatch this up? or will CC release it again in 6 months? 1. You don't think it's one of the best movies ever.
2. Criterion rereleases it 6 months from now.
it should still hold value as a collectible. You may even make money from selling it off. Hell, I already own a copy, and I might just buy five more.

I never got around to buying it because it was upper-tier priced even though its extras didn't warrant it

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
Ah, it's definitely no less value than say Throne of Blood, Redbeard, or Diary of a Country Priest... they all have commentaries but no other extras and have the $40 SRP. This has a couple interviews, a resto demonstration, presented the newly restored scene for the first time, etc.
It's a lot like All That Heaven Allows. A total masterpiece w no commentary and a couple of quick extras... and who could live without All That Heaven Allows? I never thought the price-tiering was demonstrably consistent enough to be easily explainable.
Then you get something like The Most Dangerous Game...

I put in my order on Amazon today . . . as for picking up multiple copies, well, I prefer my investments to retain slightly more liquidity than OOP dvds do!

Great to know that you couldn't live without All That Heaven Allows. I don't know why but reading that made my day.HerrSchreck wrote:It's a lot like All That Heaven Allows. I bought this DVD back in the US (used copy too), about 5 years ago, and I STILL haven't watched it. Might be criminal to some. It's been on my to-watch list forever. I guess the time is now.... or tomorrow.

It's endlessly rewatchable-- with all his natural brilliance, education, and filmmaking skills Sirk never once condescends to the material. It's a magical tapestry the guy weaves, and he sucks me right in every time.Michael wrote:Great to know that you couldn't live without All That Heaven Allows. Easily one of the best Fellini films and immensely preferable to La Strada.
The ending is, of course, beautifully simple and one of the greatest moments in cinema.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
Because of the film's/Cabiria's obvious referencing of Chaplin, I'd note that the ending of the film, and it's beauty, and it's simplicity, is (almost) on a par with the perfect simplicity of the end of Chaplins masterpiece, City Lights.Cde. wrote:The ending is, of course, beautifully simple and one of the greatest moments in cinema.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
In the booklet included with the DVD, which contains an excerpt from I, Fellini, Fellini states:
I love at the end of the excerpt, Fellini, regarding the end of the film, states:If there is any influence on me, it was Chaplin's City Lights, one of my favorite films. Giulietta's portrayal of Cabiria reminds me, as it has many people, of Chaplin's tramp...Spoiler
I leave Cabiria looking at the camera with a glimmer of new hope at the end, just as Chaplin does with his tramp in City Lights.
I have too. [-o<I, myself, have worried about her fate ever since.

So, what's the story with this? Is it OOP or not? Two months on from the panic, it's no longer listed as OOP on Criterion's site and it seems to be in stock everywhere except for DVD Empire.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
Isn't it a Studio Canal title? With the other Canals coming back into print, it seems that Criterion has worked out a deal Lions Gate to keep these films. It will be interesting to see if the titles coming back into print and any copies from new printings of Nights of Cabira have the Lions Gate logo on the back.

Re: 49 Nights of Cabiria
Is there any definitive word on a new edition? I've just gotten into Fellini and really want to see this film but I don't want to order the older version only for a new one to come out soon thereafter. Thanks.
