Looking forward to seeing this stuff.

So if one were to preorder Seventh Seal now, would the price be honored?

Hard to say because Criterion is not taking preorders at the moment.

No DVD cover should make you squint just to see the title of the film. The best Marienbad cover for me is actually the Fox Lorber, which is a neat still of the leads.

This is a great film, so I'm pleased to see the official announcement (not to mention the wealth of extra features), but they need to darken the font on the cover or junk it like they did with Viridiana.

The more you guys hate on the Marienbad cover, the more I realize I like it.

Agreed.
The film is, after all, about washed-out and/or faulty memories.

I'm curious about the printing process—whether it's just be a standard case, or maybe an embossed sleeve a la The White Album?

The press release over at Home Theater Forum has the DVD as $29.95 and the Blu-ray at $39.95 like on the Criterion site.

I got the same thing, but then the PDF that was also sent out states the $39.95 price for both. I'm betting it's the higher price but it would be a fantastic deal for the DVD if it was $29.95.

Assuming the pricing disparity is correct, I'm guessing it would probably go something like this:

Seventh Seal DVD = 29.95
Seventh Seal + Bergman Island DVD package (ala Grey Garden/The Beales)= 39.95
Seventh Seal Blu-ray (including Bergman Island as an extra) = 39.95

That would seem reasonable.

At any rate, here's what I have for Andre, though since it's not on the site yet it could change:

And then here's the other cover for Marienbad that was in the sell sheet (ignore the text at the bottom):

They've never shown two different covers in a sell sheet before (that I know of) so I figure there's more to it.

Andre is pretty good. It would have been a nice touch to have given credit on the cover to Shawn and Gregory as writers/actors in addition to Malle as director, but then again, I wouldn't want to encourage selective auterism on the cover designs.

I agree and pray they don't change it.

I've never seen them do it before. I'm betting that the white cover is an embossed cardstock sleeve, and the cover you posted is on a regular Criterion keepcase underneath.

Can someone please tell me how/where to get those sell sheets and/or press releases. Is there also some kind of archive of those online somewhere?

That Marienbad cover has major issues. The text is placed too low, and the plain white makes it looks like it's fan-made.

I thought we already established that the people behind the Marienbad release aren't fans :P

If Criterion wanted the Last Year At Marienbad cover to be white noise on the retail shelf and look like a broken .jpg on websites, they succeeded admirably.

Not sure if I'd call the Andre cover an all-time great in the collection but it's definitely among the best covers this year (not that it had any serious competition this month).
