Just wondering why there is no review for the film Shame in the Bergman boxset released by MGM, but reviews for the other films. Any chance we could see that DVD reviewed Gary?

Hi Gary, do you have any plans to update the comparison reviews of "Happy Together" and "Careful" with the new releases from, respectively. Kino and Zeitgeist?

(Considering the companies involved, I'm guessing this is a "no review copies issued" situation!)

I have both the Kino and Zeitgeist versions of Careful. There is a vast difference. The new transfer is beautiful. It's more film-like, crisper, and shows more grain and detail. Colours are more golden, rather than the redness of the Kino. The Kino also appears to be squeezed horizontally, whereas the Zeitgeist looks correct. I have some rudimentary screen captures I could email if you PM me. I don't know how to post captures.

Edit: I've just checked and the commentary is indeed new, in case this hasn't been noted elsewhere.

DVDBeaver would have been better served if Gary concentrated more on editing his reviews. Sigh.

Worst April fools joke ever:

From new Beaver splash page
WHAT'S NEXT?

In the past 2 months one of our luckiest 'Beavers' were part of the team who are helping to restore the 'film find of the century' - the original, full, 9 1/2 hour cut of Greed (1924) found in Erich von Stroheim's niece Helga's garage attic stored there, unbeknownst to her, for over 60 years! This will be DVDBeaver's Signature Series spine #1 on Blu-ray - but restoration completion and rendering to high-definition isn't expected till approximately August of 2010.

Gary, this is not funny  . Quite apart from the fact that "film find of the century" would be... youknowwhat....

It's not even moderately convincing, the requirement for every good April Fool's Day joke.

Yeah, of course. Not even moderately convincing.

I mean, come on...

Well, unless you'd just woken up after a bad night's sleep and happened to scroll down to the bit about Greed. Maybe, then, you'd be taken in just for a moment. Um... Or not. No, I guess probably not.

Very weak indeed.

I thought the fucked up screengrabs for the MoC A Time to Love and a Time to Die comparison was the April Fools joke?

After all these MoC titles' grabs, I'm sure Nick would think extremely accurate framegrabs the more appropriate hoax....?

Until I got to "GREED", I was totally suckered. #-o

Oh, to have a big, synapse-pulsing, scam-sniffing brain like the one straining against sloper's skull... ah well, you got to me only by appealing to my desires. My vanity and, yes, greed are usually implicated.

Um, so this really isn't happening? 'Cause I'd really, really like to upgrade my crappy Image disc of "Detour" to blu-ray. :-k

Really though, Gary, not even moderately convincing. I shall now berate you mercilessly for your failure to sufficiently amuse me on this most auspicious of days. harrumph

Hey Rich bud, hope you are well - April too!

Yeah - you guys here are just too smart to be fooled :^o

I have a few hundred emails that seem 'tricked', but many email me back about 30 minutes later - figuring it all out (I shoulda kept out the Greed part - Helga ?!?!?- sheeesh).

The funniest thing is that I created the 'DVDBeaver Signature Blu-ray Line' page about two weeks ago - preparing to ensnare my modest following with a little fantasy.

As for the tired story of MoC grabs - you can see in the A Time To Live... thread.
Later guys,

Wow, what a lot of tough customers around here, (not that that's a surprise.)
You had me going for a moment - 'til the GREED bit - and I found it good for a giggle.
Thanks Gary!

You could also have pre-announced Four Devils.
