Fox doesn't own Sleuth even though they were the theatrical distributor. It has a complicated rights situation which I delved into a little bit here. Long story short: it's probably owned by pharmaceutical company Bristol-Meyers Squibb and may possibly be under current license to Paramount.

That is really too complicated for something that should be simple. Too bad though since I'd love to have this one in hand.

Does anybody know if the 1935 Dante's Inferno has had a release in the intervening 7 years that the original list (on the first page) was made? If not, I suppose Twilight Time or Criterion might be the only hope.

Has anybody in charge of home video at 20th Century Fox ever dropped a clue as to why the company hasn't jumped on the "made to order" archive bandwagon yet? It seems to be the last major studio that's still holding out on the concept.

Because it's awesome. I wouldn't really risk giving them any ideas when they're still releasing films on real disc and keeping most of their film still in print.

I wish they would release Cavalcade as an individual release. I believe it's the only Best Picture not to be available as an individual release.

Indeed. I'm currently working my way through all of the BP winners and Cavalcade was one of the hardest to sit through thus far. You keep expecting it to upend or at least permit some irony toward its class consciousness but it's all laughably straightfaced. The most interesting thing about it is seeing William Cameron Menzies' surreal montage effects in place far ahead of Gone with the Wind.

All that said, it does seem cynical of Fox to bury the film in a $400 box set -- why release it at all then? -- but didn't they pull the same thing (albeit far more affordably) with Sunrise?

Cavalcade is one of three Best Picture winners I have yet to see, the other two being The Broadway Melody and Tom Jones. Suffice it to say it will probably be the last and not just due to its inaccessibility.

Though I can't imagine how it can be worse than Cimarron.

Fox has licensed some titles to Simply Media in the UK that are making their first appearance in 'Scope, including George Cukor's Justine and Gary Cooper in 10 North Frederick (both confirmed by Amazon reviewers to be in Scope on the DVD). I've also spotted Tales of Manhattan and Forever Amber (Both DVD-Rs in R1), Banjo on My Knee (Unreleased Stanwyck/McCrea musical), Hawks' Road to Glory, and China Girl

Bertolucci's LA LUNA and Paul Newman's The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds continue to be M.I.A. from DVD/Blu-Ray in North America.

Robert Altman's elusive H*E*A*L*T*H is still controlled by Fox. It hasn't screened in ages, either.
The UCLA Film & Television Archive, which restored two of his titles, has said that they're interested in
working on others, and it wouldn't surprise me if that ended up being chosen.

one of the most bafflingly unavailable titles from Fox must be BETRAYAL (1983) . How a film starring two Oscar winners, written
by a Nobel laureate AND famously parodied on SEINFELD can still be relegated to VHS is just bizarre.
