I'm getting tired of putting Cook, Thief... every month, but I'm going to keep doing it.

Unless, of course, my predicting it every month is actually the reason for why it hasn't been released yet. What a quandry.

the cook, the thief film has to be released b/c i too have been waiting for ever. gray's anatomy would be welcome edition as well (6+ yrs in waiting). gremillon/costa would be awesome on eclipse for 8/09 (both unlikely). when are the announcements coming? probably on the 15th?

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm guessing we'll get a Gorin Eclipse Set sooner than we do Vivre sa vie (or Week End, for that matter).

Has Weekend been confirmed? Does Janus/Criterion have the rights? I havent noticed it on the impressive list compiled by this site. Vivre sa Vie appears definite with the poster/Janus release that is still going on.

Weekend was a NYer title, thus it must remain in limbo until someone acquires the rights. I'm sure Criterion would love to pick up many of the NYer titles but only if the price is right.

As for My Life to Live, I received an email from Mulvaney this week where he stated that Criterion has yet to begin production on the disc. They like to spread out their auteurs to one a year (or two if paired together) so the next Godard will be 2010 at the earliest.

When they roll out a new director they sometimes release a bit more... like they did with Malle.

Well, they're also sitting on a shitload of Rossellini, with the upcoming war trilogy, the other eclipse history set, and possibly the Bergman films. Vivre sa Vie is probably the last Godard they have available (aside from maybe an Alphaville re-release). Petit Soldier/Carabiniers are held by the Weinsteins (right?), Weekend is in NY limbo, and Godard's later work is Godard's later work. Who knows what pit of rights all that's floating in. It makes sense that they'd want to let it trickle out slowly.

Right. I think they only have one more Godard, three more Malles, one or two more Bunuels, one more Melville, so I suspect they will spread these out. With Pialat and Yang, I think Criterion only had the rights to one from each. Hopefully that will change, and along with Yang they start picking up some Hou hsiao-hsien titles.

A lot of this spacing out is probably because they assign auteurs with specific Criterion producers, so it's a time issue as much as it is a deliberate issue.

I wonder if they will start to release some more Neorealist films, possibly some more Expressionist films as well. Either way that would be a nice change from all the French, and Japanese films everyone on here is always arguing over.

A long long time ago I asked about more Pialat(No specific title) and got no response either.

By no conceivable leap of supposition could Criterion best any MOC Pialat title, so if they're going to release something, hopefully it's the now OOP Van Gogh

Personally I'd rather have Le Garcu or La maison de bois; which I don't believe are available in any English friendly editions.

Any non-MOC'd Pialat would be welcome, I'm sure. That said, they'd probably only go after Under the Sun of Satan anyways
