Quick update on the Waltz With Bashir Blu-ray - it's a two-disc edition, the first a Blu-ray disc containing the film and the trailer (both in HD), the second a DVD containing the extras.

So provided you're able to handle PAL DVDs, you should have no problem playing everything regardless of where you're based.

As for the transfer of the main feature, I've only watched the first five minutes or so, but it looks absolutely state of the art - and clearly far superior to anything that SD video could resolve.

I've watched the whole main feature on the first blu-ray dvd and I agree with the aforementioned, it looks and sounds (!) fabulous. By the way and most important, a fascinating and multi layered 'film'.

I got the DVD edition of Waltz With Bashir. The deleted scenes and documentary are not included, which is a shame, especially because on the interview, he talks about the deleted scenes being on the dvd....

I'm guessing a decision was made at the marketing stage to make the DVD a single-disc edition and encourage more take-up of the Blu-ray - because there's no logical reason why the DVD edition couldn't have been a double-discer, including the second disc (a DVD) that's part of the Blu-ray package.

Mind you, you could always get hold of that extras DVD by buying the Blu-ray edition, but that seems a fairly expensive way of going about it!

Is Rohmer's Tales of the Four Seasons box OOP? Amazon only has it available from sellers, though the four individual films are all still listed.

Were there ever any chances of AE releasing the Hungarian-dubbed MAN FROM LONDON?

I get the impression that Tarr has essentially disowned that version as a temporary festival stopgap before he finished the Anglo-French version that he intended from the start. Certainly, the film makes much more situational sense in the bilingual version - Brown and Morrison are clearly intended to speak a different language from Maloin and his family.

Loved, loved this! (THE MAN FROM LONDON). What a riveting, completely entrancing piece of work. Throughout, I couldn't help thinking... "this would look amazing on Blu-ray..." - but don't be put off the DVD, it looks great, and it's anamorphic.

Well, it looks even better on 35mm...

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Ditto about the disc - it's an excellent home video representation. JC - belated thanks for your thoughts above!

Jacques Rivette's Secret Defense, both parts of Jeanne La Pucelle (only individually), a new special edition of La Belle Noiseuse, and a collection including Va Savoir, Histoire de Marie et Julie and Secret Defense are being released in August.

BTW, What A Disgrace: where did you find the info on the new Rivettes? Just curious, because my ever-fearful mind suddenly reminded me that it might not be the full 5 1/2 hour "Jeanne", but the shorter 'international' version. I don't think AE will go for the latter, but I'd love to be sure about it before I open the champagne for real....

Thanks! Nice cover art (as seen at play.com), though tantalizingly, only "Secret Defense" and the 3-disc "Noiseuse" come with info about film duration. Okay, I'll keep my fingers crossed...

When AE released Jeanne la pucelle at the cinema it was in the shorter version, so it's quite likely they'll relase this version on DVD.

Fail.

During the retrospective in 2006, the AE print that circulated was in fact the 5+ hour cut.

Was that print definitely from Artificial Eye? It makes sense. I have high hopes that the dvd will be complete. I feel like we've been really lucky with Rivette dvds in the UK - with these releases (if Joan is complete), we will have an unbroken string of films from Love on the Ground to Don't Touch The Axe in superior versions and complete forms from AE and Bluebell (excepting Divertmento, which has been released in Hong Kong in a decent package). Along with the 2 BFI's, once we take stock we have a relative wealth of Rivette material available to us. Of course, some of his most challenging films are unavailable (I remember seeing L'amour Fou for the first and thinking I was going to die, literally; very strange - I felt like all of cinema was collapsing around me. It put me in a very melancholic mood, until the next week when I saw Out 1, it felt like cinema was being rebuilt around me and as a viewer, I was in the middle of the construction. Of course, this newly constructed cinema was much more beautiful than the original before it), but I cherish having any Rivette on hand and I think it bodes well for future release. I am very excited for an (what I assume to be) anamorphic Secret Defense (a truly great film) and of course, Joan.

Edit: Just remembered that Up, Down, Fragile doesn't have a decent release in the English speaking world. Anyone know who owns that one?
