Yeah, Va Savoir+ presents us with a special problem. I have not heard one account of it and there's a big debate on whether or not it even exists (making it surpass Out 1 in the mysterious factor). The only real info I've ever been able to find on it is that it's allegedly 220 minute and it played for a week, April 24th to 30th, in Paris and made $1778 (more than 6 months after the original's release). If this got a release, I'd probably have a stroke.

And which will now be released by AE, too, as part of their forthcoming 3-disc edition of "Noiseuse". Don't expect too much from it, though. While it's interesting to compare the two versions, there's little doubt that the 4 hour version is much, much superior.

Now let's only hope AE lay their hands on "Duelle", "Noroit" and "Merry go round", too. I always regarded these three films as belonging together (i.e. not just the first two), and the absence of all three of them in the English-speaking world is disturbing, but also gives me hope for someone doing a box-set in the hopefully near future.

I agree with the superiority of Divertimento, but I do think it is interesting and compared to the heaviness of the original, it's fun to see the same subject treated with a certain breeziness. It's very exciting to have them both in one package, for the reason that I think the package is a sort of microcosm of the entirety of Rivette's later period.

I agree that we need editions of Duelle, Noroit, and Merry Go Round, stat. I agree with you that all 3 should be packaged together. I'm usually the odd man out when it comes to this, but out of the 3 I like Merry Go Round the best. There's something about that film - when I watch it I feel like everyone involved with it was on the brink of madness. The first time I saw it, there were no english subs. As most of it is in English, I thought most of the pertinent information was revealed in French. The next time I saw it was with subs, and I was even more lost! The film has great atmosphere and its use of music is wonderful. I have the German disc and it's actually pretty good, so we know good decent transfers exist for these 3 films.

Yes, it's wonderful, though your description of it seems to fit "Noroit" even better, which is Rivette at his most freaked-out. I have no doubt that the German disc is fine, but stupidly it's only available in that box set. If the set at least contained "Duelle" AND "Noroit"; but no, rather include "Celine" and "Va savoir" alongside "Duelle" and "Merry-go-round". Who makes such decisions?

BTW: we also still need an English-friendly disc of "Le pont du Nord"...

Yes, the combination of those 4 films is bewildering. And as far as Le Pont du Nord is concerned, I'm surprised that isn't out already. I actually like that film a little less than most Rivette's, but I really need to see it again. If I'm not mistaken, it was restored a few years back and from what I heard, it looked great. I still find the film fascinating and I think could be a good point of entry into Rivette's more extreme films while foreshadowing techniques he would develop in the subsequent pictures. (And by extreme films, I do mean Noroit - a film that I find close to impenetrable. However, in its formal construction, I can see a method to the madness, especially with compared with Duelle. Simply, two of the most fascinating films in all of cinema. Merry Go Round develops under those same lines, but collapses under the weight of that construction and sort of makes itself by digging out of the wreckage. Although, my opinions may be tainted by the knowledge of Rivette's breakdown during the other Albert Finney picture he started; It's hard to tell.)

I'm not sure about a recent restoration but I definitely would guess it's a new transfer, something AE have been doing with a few of their releases recently

Because on account of having just seen Boy Meets Girl last night, I kind of want to own a copy, considering it is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, and I'd have to also buy a region-free DVD player. Yeah, I saw that (and free shipping too, no less!). The only thing that worries me is: 'Usually dispatched within 3 days', which could be potentially keywords for: put it in your cart and then get the email that says, "We're sorry, but we no longer carry this product as its been discontinued." Are we sure this set is still in print?

Okay, I know, but I'm just a little worried because the collection doesn't even show up on the Artificial Eye website, and I don't want to go out and buy a region-free DVD player (although, I probably will eventually) and find that this DVD collection is unobtainable or close to, since I'm living in the USA.

Okay, then. I'll probably give it a try. I mean, I've never order region-free DVDs before, so there is a trepidation to giving out credit card information to overseas websites that I've never even heard of until just a few days ago. I'm halfway tempted to just order a $35 copy from Amazon.com. But if you guys say this is a good site, I might give it a try.

About 'Jeanne la pucelle', I've been only able to find the shorter cuts at the bbfc website, I hope it doesn't mean they are goind to release those.
