#1101 Post by Hopscotch »

Via Film New Europe:

"Cannes and Berlin awarded Romanian director Cristi Puiu is in production with his third feature, Aurora, a crime story with the director playing the lead role himself.

The Romanian director plays a 42-year old divorcee and father of two, acquiring a driving licence in order to play the part. Puiu also wrote the script for Mandragora.

Aurora is a co-production from Romanian company Mandragora Films (http://www.mandragora.ro/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), Swiss company Bord Cadre Films (http://www.bordcadrefilms.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), the French Société Parisienne de Production (http://www.thecopro.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and the German company Essential Filmproduktion GmbH ( [email protected] e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

The project has received the biggest grant from the National Centre for Cinema (http://www.cncinema.abt.ro" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), 421,850 Euro. It received 250,000 Euro from Eurimages, and is also supported by Arte France Cinema (http://www.artefrancecinema.visualnet.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). The budget is 1.5 million Euro.

The shooting is due to be completed by mid-May. The production team is maintaining a cloud of secrecy around the film. None of the rest of the cast has been announced.

The release of the film is set for 2010."

How does one even make a film about facebook in the first place? And how does one make it without it turning into a bunch of self-obsessed youth bullshit? then again maybe that is the whole point.

can't wait until the wacky-C-approved bluray hits!

Aronofsky must be kicking himself for not getting out that Myspace movie sooner.

It's probably better than making another pretty-as-hell wuxia film but only marginally. Zhang Yimou/Chen Kaige's cosying up to the authorities has destroyed them as artists.

Well, we have no idea if or when the film will arrive, at least we have this glad-handing, back-slapping, self-congratulatory documentary to tide us over.

Do you think he'd be interested in a criterionforum.org movie? Though a word of warning - it would probably only work as an indie styled argument fest like Metropolitan and then get blown out of the water by a Scorsese adaptation of The Auteurs with all the members played by the biggest celebrities (Julia Roberts is ThatGirlSmile!, exploring the wonders of Tarkovsky for the first time. Morgan Freeman is the List Master) on its opening weekend. It would hopefully retain its cult appeal though!

Writin it for the Kurtzman/Orci boys! It'll be like the old 80's Amblin movies: Goonies, Young Sherlock... In that vein.
I really don't know what to say about this.

In other equally ludicrous news, Universal has optioned Asteroids - a video game with no story or characters - for a movie.

Just catching up on Twitch and noted a couple of interesting sounding films: The Clone Returns Home gets a mixed review but still sounds interesting from the write up and the unsubtitled trailer the article links to - sort of like a reversed Solaris in which the protagonist is the recreation of a dead original and comes down to Earth rather than going off into the universe.

For Michael, teaser trailers for the new Jean-Pierre Jeunet film Micmacs A Tire-Larigot.

After Versus and Midnight Meat Train, Ryuhei Kitamura's latest film, produced by All About Lily Chou-Chou director Shunji Iwai is an rotoscoped animation Baton. Difficult to tell much from the action oriented trailers but there might be something good there.

And I really like the review for Francios Ozon's Ricky:
The message of the film seems to be a cautionary one: parenthood is not to be taken lightly and a baby is not a quick fix for either a troubled relationship or to fill an emotional void. It’s tiring, stressful and relentlessly demanding, especially when the baby in question is of the freaky flying variety.

Tomas Alfredson will direct an adaptation of John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy for his next film. I imagine they'll change the title.

I hope not. Either way, great news. It'll be tough to top Alec Guinness as Smiley, though.

Agreed. I'd rather just see a straightforward telling of the Cambridge Five.

From Film Comment's e-newsletter: Alexandr Sokurov’s latest, Faust, will continue the Russian director’s series of films exploring the ways in which absolute power corrupts absolutely, inaugurated 10 years ago with his Hitler film Moloch and continued with Taurus (Lenin) and The Sun (Emperor Hirohito)

David Cronenberg to direct Cosmopolis, based on Don DeLillo´s novel.

Also, has Warren Beatty returned to filmmaking to direct a Dick Tracy TV-movie starring Leonard Maltin? Wtf?
