Are you talking to me? I just said that I've gone hd/blu and was surprised at the lack of talk on blu in general. Why is it surprising that I exist? You mean it's surprising I didn't adopt earlier? The technology is still relatively expensive and in the grand scheme of things, there is still barely anything available.aox wrote:I can't believe people like you still exist. After seeing the power of Blu, I will never buy another DVD for as long as I live. Sucks, because I would easily be blind buying many of Criterion's releases this year (eg. The Human Condition), but I guess I will Netflix them until they are released on Blu.

Re: Blu-ray, in General
I don't think the technology is that expensive anymore as players now can be found for less than $100 and discs are around the $20-$30 mark for new releases. The blu-ray library may not be as big as the DVD one, but studios are releasing their titles at a faster pace than they did with DVD. Like Jeff said above, Blu-ray is not a novelty anymore and is discussed throughout the forum in their respective threads.Cinetwist wrote:Are you talking to me? Re: Blu-ray, in General
My complete apologies. I completely misread what you wrote as saying that you hoped the lack of discussion was proof that the format was failing; as if you were still a disgruntled HD supporter. Or worse, the occasional person I meet that still can't see the difference (or refuses to) between 480p and 1080p (They exist, believe me).Cinetwist wrote:Are you talking to me? Again, my apologies.
However, in terms of 'discussion'.. What exactly is there to discuss at this point? Blu is going to look better than DVD. That is pretty much a constant at this point. So, technology-wise, there isn't much to discuss, unless we have twenty people in one thread making one line posts like, "I can't believe how wonderful this looks.", "I have never seen this film this clearly", etc... or pretty much any other obvious post you can think of. And I believe there is a thread about companies that have dropped the ball on their Blu presentation (e.g. Patton).
People on this board tend to talk about the film itself.

Re: Blu-ray, in General
I have a question about Bluray and subtitles.
Sometimes looking at reviews for titles and I see the list of subtitles, I see that they have differing information, even though they are supposedly from the same region and manufacturer.
For example, on the "An American In Paris" Japanese Bluray review on dvdbeaver, it's mentioned that there are no Japanese subtitles, which just doesn't sound right, it's from Japan!
Are there "hidden" subtitles around?
By just toggling through the subtitle key on the remote, I assume they would pop up, just like DVDs do. Do they not show up depending on the machine possibly?

Re: Blu-ray, in General
Fantasium have a very handy list of Blu-Rays from around the world with Japanese subtitles. It also lists the region of each disc.
I'm sure a lot of these are already available in Japan, but they're probably more expensive. It seems to be a better situation than DVD anyway.

They were supposed to have released Metropolis on Blu-ray a while ago, and then all that lost footage popped up. So they've been anticipating Blu-ray for some time.knives wrote:I more shocked the kino went into the blu game so soon then the actual release.
Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. Because your post reads like you used Babelfish to translate it into Czech and then back into English.

They were supposed metropolis have released to the possibility-ray and at the same time year, and then everything that has lost shots starts to. So that it took already anticipate option of a-ray after a certain period of time.

Re: Blu-ray, in General
Wasn't Kino supposed to have released Fallen Angels on Blu, as well? I'm still kind of bitter that never materialized (along with Happy Together, but at least that wasn't tantalizingly hinted at to begin with). I'll happily put the Keaton on the shelf next to the MoC box if they can manage not to screw it up in some way.

Ugh, has there been any talk of a US release of A Hard Day's Night on Blu? Checked out Gary's review and the Canadian disc looks like a timely cash grab.

Re: Blu-ray, in General
I'd really fancy a Blu-ray of John Boorman's The General, done properly - I saw it in the cinema in black-and-white 2.35:1, and it looked fabulous, but for some bizarre reason the DVD only offers black--and-white 16:9 or colour 2.35:1. (It was shot in Super 35 colour, so the 16:9 version is opened-out rather than cropped).

I was shocked to see The Searchers Blu-Ray for 7.99 at Amazon. Is there something monumentally wrong with the transfer? It seems DVDBeaver said it had some issues but they don't seem too major but I remember the 2DVD set was supposedly terrible. I was curious if someone else owns it and can tell me if the Blu-Ray is a good transfer or if it's a travesty.

Re: Blu-ray, in General
It's not technically PAL speedup since PAL and NTSC are not a concern in HD, but Blu-ray discs using HD masters originally meant for PAL DVDs and therefore transferred at 25 frames-per-second (as opposed to the film and NTSC standard of 24 fps) will still exhibit speedup. These discs are rare, but they do exist.

Does anyone know what's happening with this? Amazon still has it available for preorder, but with no release date listed.Antoine Doinel wrote:It looks like it arrives on store shelves on September 15th.

Yeah, as far as I know, it's been shelved again, for some reason, without a concrete release date. The studios could be waiting to tie it in with another release. Who knows, though.swo17 wrote:Does anyone know what's happening with this? Yes. I live in Japan and use a Japanese Blu-ray recorder. When I review discs for DVD Talk shipped over from the U.S., somestimes they'll default to Japanese menu screens with Japanese audio and subtitle options. Also, sometimes other subtitles and audio not listed on the U.S. packaging also are available. It's rather ironic, because a disc that might be discounted to $9.98 in the U.S. might sell in Japan for closer to $50, yet it's exactly the same disc.I have a question about Bluray and subtitles. Mr Galbraith, respect your work a lot!
I'm not exactly sure how it works, but on a standard DVD player, toggling through the subtitle key should get you the all the language options on the disc, unless the toggling function is locked.
(One example is the "Pixar Shorts Volume 1" DVD from the US and Japan are the same, but the toggling function is diabled, so the Japanese options are there, but only if you start the disc from the Japanese menus.)
With a Blu-ray, just toggling through the subtitle or audio options won't access everything? Or is it like a disabled toggling function?
