Re: 64 The Third Man
These are like fresh hotcakes on the griddle. Can't get enough, (Blu-berry). I really do hope Criterion re-acquire the rights though. This film represents (to me), everything that has been, or ever will be, "Criterion". At the very least they'll recoup the rights and I'll have swell Christmas gifts for everybody. Or, I'll out-retire Domino.

Re: 64 The Third Man
The BD is $24, a few bucks cheaper than the DVD through Amazon at the moment. I wanted to go ahead and get two, but it would only let me add one to the cart, giving me a weird error message that the seller only had one in stock (the seller was Amazon, and they still have them in). Oh well—I already have my two DVD editions to keep me company and can always place another order if I need to.

Re: 64 The Third Man
I think that record belongs to the original release of SALO on DVD, but I don't know exactly how long it was in print.zedz wrote:I haven't really been following this sort of thing, but isn't the availability window of the Third Man Blu-Ray the shortest for any Criterion release to date (10 months)?

Re: 64 The Third Man
It was barely a year, and there weren't that many printed.manicsounds wrote: I think that record belongs to the original release of SALO on DVD, but I don't know exactly how long it was in print.
EDIT: The original DVD for The 400 Blows and then The Killer were also short lived, probably just over a year each.

I seem to remember Straw Dogs not staying around very long.

Re: 64 The Third Man
Criterion knew they would have Straw Dogs for almost exactly one year. They actually announced that it was going out of print in a year when they released it.

The Blu-ray is now sold out on Amazon. Not a moment too soon: my retirement fund copy shipped this morning! It will now go in a closet with my extra unopened copies of Ran, Contempt, and Nights of Cabiria .

Still available on DD but at $32. Thankfully I was able to get 3 copies from Amazon thanks to a blu-ray.com heads up.

Good call. Most of the online stock for these sites will probably be gone (or close to it) by the end of the November.

Re: 64 The Third Man
My Blu copy from Amazon arrived today. I own the first DVD version Criterion put out and honestly I'm not in a huge rush to revisit the film so soon (I've watched it again recently), so I might leave it in the wrapping for now and see what develops once it gets harder to find. As it's my first BD title from Criterion, though, it's tempting to just dig in.

Here's a braintwister for you: will the Blu-ray be more collectible with the original paper packaging?

I'm going to end up with one of each (alongside the 50 Years of Rialto DVD), so I'll let you know in a few years.Matt wrote:Here's a braintwister for you: will the Blu-ray be more collectible with the original paper packaging?

Re: 64 The Third Man
I doubt it'll take more than a couple of months for the BD to hit $100+ in value. Between the popularity of the film and the way a lot of BD releases hold their value, I have a feeling it'll be a real bitch to get a sealed copy of this by Christmastime.

Re: 64 The Third Man
Yes, unless of course everyone who appreciates the importance of this film just bought five copies of it this past week, leaving no one to buy your precious little out of print paperweights.

I just bought it. Both the 2-disk DVD and the Blu-ray. And I have this film in two other versions already. Help me God, what have I done? I am becoming like the rest of them.

I just gave in and bought a new copy. $27. If nothing else, I can sell in 6 months and break even. But, hopefully I will make a profit.

Re: 64 The Third Man
Depending on how long this is O.O.P I'm sure you'll turn a profit aox. I sold one of my original Salo discs for $700 before the re-issue, and just recently sold my backup copy of The Killer for $500. Both were opened.aox wrote:I just gave in and bought a new copy. $27. If nothing else, I can sell in 6 months and break even. But, hopefully I will make a profit.

oh wow, Napier. You hear these things, but to actually hear out of the horse's mouth is another. Thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully I have a nice summer coming.

For the first time in my life I can call a dvd I own an "investment." Sounds very professional, I might have to start wearing a sports jacket to complete the illusion.
Here's hoping these fortuitous prophecies hold true.
