New Films in Production

[Yakushima]

Thought I've seen a topic on Aleksey German's Arkanar's Massacre (It's hard to be a God) somewhere on this forum but could not find it.
More than 10 years in the making, this film is eidently approaching a completion.
Filming and editing have been already finished. Currently German is working on the sound for the film.
Workprint has been screened several times to a selected audience - to a huge acclaim.

Lee Yoon-ki's much-anticipated fifth feature, with working titles And Us and Breakfast at Tiffany's, has gone on hiatus for undisclosed reasons. There is no word as to when shooting might resume.

Meanwhile, Hur Jin-ho's latest feature, the Korean-Chinese co-production Season of Good Rain, is set to open in three countries (Japan being the third) next week.

IM Sang-soo*, the director of A Good Lawyer's Wife and The President's Last Bang, both excellent films, now has a re-make of KIM Ki-young's 1960 classic Hanyo (a/k/a The Housemaid) in pre-production. See link here. The luminous JEON Do-yeon is set to take on the title role. The film is slated for a 2010 release, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the original. Normally, I would be unexcited about a remake of such an landmark film, but I think the participation of IM and JEON in this project make it something worth waiting for.

I thought the same thing at first until I read:

The drama does not so much scrutinize self-started churches like Scientology or the Mormons, as much as it explores the need to believe in a higher power, the choice of which one to embrace and the point at which a belief system graduates into a religion.

The "older person taking younger person under his wing/ younger person learns about life/big issues through dealings with older person" theme seems an Anderson favorite as you could say both "Hard Eight" and "Boogie Nights" deal with this type of storyline. It'll be the execution that will make this story its own.

I'm just happy Anderson is setting something up already; that we're not waiting a few more years. But Universal, wow, they just don't seem to learn, do they?

I'm very excited about any new PTA, but I'm surprised at the subject matter and the choice of studio - I was relatively certain that Paramount would want to get a stranglehold on him after the success of There Will Be Blood. Either way, new PTA = happy mfunk.

I'm curious as to why or if Paul had a falling-out with New Line, and why they didn't put out TWBB. Now that WB is pretty much using it for a recycle bin and endless Rush Hour sequels, the question is a little moot but still remains.

Either way, I'm excited for this new film if it comes to fruition.

I think it partly has to do with Mike DeLuca leaving New Line, New Line pretty much dissolving into WB, and Paul's (old?) agent John Lesher becoming the head of Parmount Vantage at that time.

Thanks for shedding some light on that. I'm actually not surprised at all he didn't bring this to Paramount. My wild theory is that he's resentful towards them (Miramax as well) for possibly putting more weight behind No Country For Old Men to win the big two (best picture, best director) since both companies distributed them (with Miramax distributing No Country and Paramount TWBB stateside) during Oscar season.

Yeah, that, and I'm pretty sure Paramount Vantage doesn't exist anymore, partly because of the production costs vs. box office receipts of the Anderson and Coen pictures. That. And Lesher doesn't work there anymore, so Anderson probably doesn't feel loyalty to them.

The cast has now been filled out, with LEE Jeong-jae set to play the philandering husband, SEO Woo as the tormented wife, and veteran actress YOON Yeo-jeong (whose film debut was in Hwanyeo, KIM's 1971 re-imagining of Hanyo) in the role of a head housekeeper. Shooting is scheduled to begin this month.
