That axe image is straight out of Revanche. There are also the locusts of Days of Heaven, the "Dog Star Man" representing the Brakhage in Blu. Ride with the Devil is there, Che, Yojimbo, the Red Shoes, The Leopard in Blu. What's with the pitcher and that thing next to the sign?

At least there doesn't seem to be a hint of Pasolini's trilogy on there so I can be happy with my order for them.

Signs: Germany -> GERMANY YEAR ZERO, Rome ->ROME OPEN CITY & the Po Valley -> PAISA (the final episode), ROSSELLINI'S WAR TRILOGY in other words... Otherwise, but probably less likely in the circumstances, Po Valley -> could be hinting at Visconti's OSSESSIONE or indeed Antonioni's IL GRIDO (with GENTE DEL PO as a possible/desirable extra)...

Didn't catch The Red Desert until it was pointed out. Who is that supposed to be riding with the devil? It ain't Peter Lorre, but he's got a Blu M on his sleeve. What does the feather represent? What about the hotel?

I take the red ballet slippers on the Samurai warrior to mean the much anticipated Criterion re-release of the new restoration of "The Red Shoes," almost surely in blu-ray and DVD.

Any idea what the samurai represents? Surely it means Kurosawa, and the blue sword tells me it'll be blu-ray. Seven Samurai seems most logical, but then again, with Rashomon being restored, that could be a strong possibility as well.

Man, I love these brain teasers! Criterion you rock!

I don't think it's Rashomon. No samurais like that in that film. Probably Seven Samurai.

What's Idlewild Home for Ladies? It's great news about The Leopard. I'm stuck in region A and wanted to get the BFI version badly.

Also, what's that thing between Dog Star Man and the sign post? What's the deal with the jug of water?

M on Blu is no surprise. I already own their edition on DVD, so I'll probably stick with MoC for the new features and HD image. Besides, I don't have to wait as long either as it just comes out in two months.

To sum up:
red desert = Red Desert
blue leopard = The Leopard in Blu
blue locusts = Days of Heaven in Blu
Che T-shirt = Che
girl with flowers in hair and ballet shoes = Lola Montes
polka dot gun = Dillinger is Dead
samurai with blue sword = Yojimbo/Sanjuro/Seven Samurai in Blu
red shoes = The Red Shoes
giant baby = maybe just the new year, or Colossal Youth
Germany, Rome, Po Valley signs = War Trilogy
Paris, Texas sign = Paris, Texas
Dog Star Man = Brakhage vol. 2, Brakhage in blu
riding with devil = Ride with the Devil
motorcycle and flowers = Close-Up
blue M on guy's sleeve = M in Blu
blue axe in stump = Revanche

don't know:
pitcher
feather
weird thing on the ground next to the sign post
who is the guy with the weird jacket/sweater/shirt, distictive hair and face on the back of the motorcycle supposed to be?
The Idlewild Home for Ladies sign
hotel sign

It'll be interesting to see what (or whether) Criterion does (anything) to stack titles like RED DESERT, THE LEOPARD, THE RED SHOES, M with extras on Region A Blu versus prior Region B editions from the likes of the BFI...

That's Kiarostami's CLOSE-UP - it's the director Mohsen Makhmalbaf in the scene from the end of that film...

Thanks! That certainly solves the motorcycle and flowers, and Close-Up should be coming this year. I think there might be yet another clue embedded there though. The cartoon guy's unusual face and hair suggest that he is somebody else. It looks like a caricature of a famous character actor, but I can't place who!

I totally agree, his face, hair and slump are familiar; unless he's a director? I'm guessing it's not Eisenstein?

Tarantino was an early-ish fan of AK's CLOSE-UP - the Hawaiian shirt and the face (maybe) are his?... One director substituted for another, in a film by a third...

I think the samurai with the blue sword is the Seven Samurai on blu, since they've already broadcast that they are working on it.

just did some looking around. "Idlewild" seems like it might be a reference to anne of green gables.

Is the object next to the sign post supposed to be the modernist glass vase in Summer Hours?
