criterion have officially announced at their website they have stopped producing DVDs, and that the collection will end at spine number 300.

this is, quote, "because of the impending arrival of the new blu ray/HD-DVD format, the criterion collection will resume spine number 301 on these new formats in around 1 years time (july 2006).".

Do I hear the distant plash of thousands of fanboys hurling themselves lemming-like into the sea?

Just a thought, but perhaps Criterion is preparing to announce the launch of their new "cult film sub-company." That might explain the delay with this month's update. Also, the list of upcoming August-December releases should include Au revoir les enfants, Ran, and the Wages of Fear reissue - all of which have been officially announced.

I think the August-December releases are relegated to Home Vision.

And lo the coming of the Messiah will make known when the Collection of Criterion shall reach the number 300. 300 shall be the number, not 299 nor 301 but 300. 302 is Right Out! The end is nigh with 300. AMEN.

I take back what I said before. Those titles represent a suck-month. A re-issue, an inevitable title from a long-Criterion-worn director (not that I dislike AK or Ran), and one film that nobody can remember, even after they've just watched it.

They must have really stepped up their leakage this month. I really hope the wait will bring 10 titles. I can always sell my car.

Spine #300 must have been their cutoff number. They are all vacationing in the Bahamas right now, celebrating their retirement while watching The Life Aquatic.

Nice to see the Kobayashi (though it's far from a personal favorite), but the Renoir and the Rossellini are both available with decent to great transfers in the UK. I bet there's going to be a box sometime soon.

I think they're definitely fucking with us. They know we check these things, and they're having a little bit of fun. That's not to say that the releases aren't authentic, just that they're announcing them in the most amusing way possible.

I bet the unannounced titles are Au Revoir les Enfants, another Rosellini and The Crime of Monsieur Lange or La Humaine Bete.

Just a thought....

Being that HISTORY OF VIOLENCE is New Line.... you think Criterion would release it on DVD?

We like our Japanese movies like our women here in America: full of samurais... and guns. They probably got scared of making Ozu DVDs after they sold five copies of Floating Weeds and three copies of Early Summer last year. Now it's time to show me how wrong I am by putting out an all extant Ozu silents box. Who wouldn't like that?

I'd quite happily buy each friend and member of my family an Ozu DVD ;).

That silents box has been talked about for months. Come on Criterion!

Now they're messing with the spine numbers. I wonder what's going on this month?

I think they should definitely hire me to work on their website.

I am underwhelmed by their level of activity and choices. They are sitting on some great material (Ozu, Mizoguchi, Tati. Eisenstein.etc.) that seems to be getting postponed beyond reason. I would love to see the Criterion Collection complement and not duplicate what is already (or soon expected to be) available in decent editions elsewhere. These comments would have to be tempered if their current posting for August is partial, and more will be announced later. However, this seldom happens, and in this instance the wait has not been justified by the final revelation.
