Cold Weather (Aaron Katz, 2010)

I don't know what the majority of posters think about Aaron Katz, but I think he is one of the more interesting american up and coming directors today. I found Dance Party, USA to be a little gem within the rubble that is the "mumblecore" (sorry) genre. And Quiet City was quite good as well.

Synopsis:

A former forensic science major and avid reader of detective fiction, who, after making a mess of his life in Chicago, returns to his hometown of Portland, Oregon. There, he, his sister Gail, and new friend Carlos become embroiled in something unexpected.

Cold Weather recently got selected for SXSW 2010 and it seems very atune with Katz past films. I'm personally excited to see how he handles the crime thriller aspect of the film, which seems like uncharted territory and big step in a different direction for Katz.

btw, anyone else find the music in the trailer very reminiscent of Punch-Drunk Love?

Having put Quiet City in my top 20 favorites from the past decade, I am eagerly looking forward to this movie. I really hope Katz doesn't blow it.

I thought Dance Party USA was a noble failure, but Quiet City pushed a number of my buttons and earned a high placement on my 00s list. This looks like it will certainly be even better. The trailer looks fantastic--the most excited one has made me in recent memory.

Very interested to see what these mumblecore filmmakers will be able to do with more money. The Duplass Brothers have that Cyrus coming out, which looks promising, and I've yet to see Bujalski's Beeswax which from what I hear is also more like what I guess you could call "a real movie". I don't know about any similar evolution for Swanberg but I found LOL (the only one I've seen) completely boring anyway so I'm not particularly excited for that.

Hate, hate, hate Quiet City, but this looks tolerable. There's a dolly and suspense.

This had me until the pipe (okay, it had me until Aaron Katz but I suspended my judgement) and even got me back a little afterwards. I'll probably check it out; I've certainly been surprised before.

The cinematography was quite nice.

Ditto on the cinematography, even if it was a bit showy. I wish he would get weirder and not so "abc" with regard to narrative, the ending was a nice touch.
