Do you have any opinions on the film? It seems to have gotten decent reviews for a horror flick from what I can find and I'm a fan of Terry O'Quinn's work on Lost - sounds like an interesting curiosity at least.

I lobbied for both it and the sequel in the 80s List Thread. I already have the German DVD, but there's a lot of room for improvement, so I may pick up another.

And wouldn't you know it, Synapse is releasing a special edition of the second movie on September 29. Specs from Amazon.com:

Anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) Transfer
Audio Commentary with Director Jeff Burr and Producer Darin Scott
All-New Featurette: The Stepfather Chronicles: Daddy s New Home
Alternate/Deleted Scenes
Still Gallery
Theatrical Trailers

Gave up on Lost long ago, but Terry O'Quinn was my favourite part of the show, so I'll definitely check at least the first one out.

Anyone find any specs on the extras on the first one?
The original Stepfather has some great stuff involving telephones and nagging wives.

It's coming from Shout Factory.
Fangoria wrote:The DVD will feature a new high-definition widescreen transfer and include a number of special features, including audio commentary by and interviews with producer Jay Benson and actress Jill Schoelen (who plays the villain’s suspicious stepdaughter), plus more to be announced. Retail price is $19.99; stay tuned for the full content details.
They have the cover art too.

Best moment of the film = Best possible cover for the film. Can't wait for both of these! =D>

The auteurist critic Dave Kehr, then writing for the Chicago Tribune, accorded this film a 4 star rating and a spot high atop his 10 Best list that year (1987).

This looks really interesting now that I realize O'Quinn is in this. I remember seeing it air on IFC a few times but avoided since I thought it was another bad slasher flick, that question on the mirror on the DVD cover is enough for me to consider blind-buying this.

Spoiler
One of my fondest movie viewing memories is watching this for the first time on IFC with my then-girlfriend and both of us having the biggest simultaneous "OH SHIT" moment when he says the line. Still makes me smile to even think about our reaction

I heard that the John List case inspired this story if any of you care to brush up on that story on the Wikipedia

I was reading Savant's review of the dvd and I have come to the conclusion that Will Forte kind of looks like Terry O'Quinn. The new version looks horrible.

I love Shout! Factory as much as the next guy, but judging from the Audition BD, I'd say this isn't going to look any better than the DVD, and is still going to have a whole bunch of print damage.
