I would love to see Mitsuo Yanagimachi's Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Goddo supiido yuu! Burakku emparaa, 1976) get a decent release. I have an acceptable at best bootleg someone gave me as a birthday present a little while back, where whole scenes of dialogue appear as subs before anyone even begins talking. The game of attributing the dialogue to which person wore off in seconds.

It is a nice denoument to the Japanese New Wave where the nihilism has begun to be tempered off and waves of these youthful motorcycle hoards had moved from matchless aimlessness to a new found sense of order and control. It's certainly an important document of japanese youth in the mid 1970's and a beautifully controlled study of life in and out of "family". Not to mention, from a sales perspective alone, the title will attract many with great interest.

There is a DVD of this out in France without subtitles and here is a review from DVDBeaver. The reviewer says the dialogue has little to no importance, but still.

Seconded, and also Farewell to the Land and Fire Festival. But BigP is right about the crossover potential for Black Emperor: two tiny niche markets are surely better than one!

If you're desperate to see this and can deal with french subs it was paired with another short by Golestan on Cinema 07 from Leo Scheer. It seems, from the frame grabs anyway, to be better quality than the Facets but then you miss out on the Makhmalbaf stuff. But you're right, SR could maybe put this in an Iranian package together with some Kiarostami and Makhmalbaf shorts to make an attractive collection.

I would like to see "Mother India" in a proper release, with proper subs and maybe a commentary track. Other classic Bollywoods would be nice as well, but "Mother India" is essential.

How is the Second Run team feeling about blu ray at the moment? Perhaps just a general idea of how far away you might be from releasing one?

I wouldn't hold your breath - I can't see how a shoestring independent with an ultra-niche catalogue would benefit from the significant additional costs of getting into Blu-ray right now.

I'd love to see HD versions of The Round-Up and Marketa Lazarova, but since it was hard enough getting decent DVD masters, I'm not expecting reissues any time soon!

It's available online in poor quality if you're desperate. I'd love to see Second Run tackle a nice Rouch Box.Chronicle of a Summer sorely needs a release, probably my favourite doc ever!

I'd love to see on dvd:

"le depart" 1967 skolimowski (still, sadly, never seen it)
"salto" 1965 konwicki (absolutely mesmerizing with stunning performance by cybulski)
"bez znieczulenia" (without anesthesia") 1978 wajda (one of his best and totally unknown)

and my dream suggestion:

"barrier" by skolimowski but finally in good quality (the version from kino polska box couldn't be any worse i suppose)

That would be great indeed--a powerful work from an under-represented country.

In a similar vein, I'd love to see decent DVDs of some Kyrgyz films such as Bolotbek Shamshiev's The White Steamship/Belyi parokhod (1976) or Tolomush Okeev's brilliant, little-seen The Descendant of the Snow Leopard/Potomok belogo barsa (1984).

I was just watching Pawel Lozinski's 100 years of Polish Cinema on the PWA set and there were some titles I'd like to see such as Zywot Mateusza (Leszczynski) and Barwy Ochronne (Zanussi) - there are Polish dvds, but they don't seem to have English subtitles. There were other films as well, but I could not identify them.

The Zanussi is available with English subtitles, but only in this box set - but at just 89.99 zlotys RRP for five films it's a bit of a bargain.

(It's £20.89, $32.02 and €23.24 at the current exchange rate).

I strongly suggest some French canadians films like ''Les bons débarras'' or many other films by Francis Mankiewicz and ''Pour la suite du monde'' There is also a lot of Gilles Carle films that should be released...
