Cameron employed some expected, boring cinematography into his film. The White Ribbon and Inglourious Basterds were far more lush and well-shot than they had any right to be.

While there is never any clear cut winner, I think if you know the work involved in Avatar you would be amazed. My feeling on Basterds however was that Richardson's work has become kind of dull, as that film felt quite flat to me.

But could you distinguish between the cinematographer's and art director's work and the CGI guys? I couldn't--same with "Dr. Parnassus," to be fair.

It's more clear in Dr. Parnassus to be fair, but quite seamless in Avatar. If you can spot it, then nobody did their job. Again, there's a lot of great DP's out there but Avatar is not without credit earned.
