Not exactly. She and Tyler Perry attached their names to it long after it was finished and had played at a bunch of festivals in order to give it a higher profile.flyonthewall2983 wrote:She produced it, didn't she?mfunk9786 wrote:Our movie?! Oh Oprah just go fuck yourself. Please.

These Argentinians are for us the Spaniards like the Rohmer films for the not French: anything sounds better with Porteño (Buenos Aires) accents, and this Campanella, who works doing House on US tv, is one of the best writers of Spanish dialogues, ever.
But the Argentinians are experts when they talk.

Re: Awards Season 2009
It was worth watching the whole event just to see the near wrestling match between Streisand and Bigelow over the statuette. Streisand offered to hold it for her while she gave her acceptance speech, but Bigelow was having none of that.

So at least it's possible that the Academy didn't give the award to the worst of the nominees in this category, also? Big night for them.rohmerin wrote:El secreto ... has been the most succesful and critical well receipt Argentian film ever in Argentina and Spain.

Re: Awards Season 2009
What was the deal with all these Twilight and Hannah Montana kids out there presenting? Is this some kind of attempt to reel in younger viewers? Slouching Miley also got extensive pre-show interviews and the trailer for her upcoming film got played repeatedly. Who's pulling the strings here? Disney?
Also, did I blink and miss Farrah in the departed montage?

Leave it to a "HistoryProf" to bring this forum to a new nadir of crudeness:
We do not call women--with the exception of Beatrice Welles--"bitches" on this forum. Whether or not you're actually a professor, at least act like you're out of high school.HistoryProf wrote:so why does this bitch get to ramble on for five minutes, but the director of best foreign film gets cut off after 60 seconds?
fuck fuck fuck. Nice white christian lady saves the poor black kid from himself. nice.
oh fuck, I forgot about Sandra Bullock and Blind Side after the Precious/Avatar assault of suck. Jesus this really is the worst year ever.
why don't they just start tossing their salads already! this is taking FOREVER.
These fuckers with cutting off the winners need to be kicked in the throat. you can show fucking interpretive dance for 10 minutes, but not give them 90 seconds on the biggest day of their careers?!??!?
*pukes*
it fucking better not. that flick pisses me off the more it wins.

Okay, so perhaps I added that last sentence. The Japanese fishing village depicted in the Oscar-winning movie "The Cove" is defending its practice of hunting dolphins.
A statement Monday from the mayor of Taiji says it is "important to respect and understand regional food cultures, which are based on traditions with long histories."
He said the movie contains statements not based on science.
He went on to add that dolphins naturally want to be entertainment stars, and the losers know that, much like Hollywood, it's a cutthroat business.

Oprah's general narcissism aside, this is pretty common, though, yes? Lynch did essentially the same thing on Crumb, didn't he?Jeff wrote:Not exactly. Though it must be some kind of law that Ricardo Darín (Nine Queens, El Aura) has to be in all of these twisty-turny thrillers produced in the country! Re: Awards Season 2009
I still have not seen Precious yet, but I must say, Mo'Nique's speech was so self-glorifying that I wish someone would have went up on stage and smacked her.
She said something along the line of, "I would like to thank the Academy for choosing the winner based on the quality of the work not on politics."
Well, sorry to burst her out-of-touch bubble but I would say 'Precious' did more politicking than most of the films nominated for Best Picture beside Avatar and The Hurt Locker.
Again, I have not yet seen her performance but I thought Maggie and Vera both did quite nice jobs with my choice being Maggie.
Overall- Terrible Academy Awards.
Although I really think 'The Hurt Locker' is WAYYYY Over-rated, I was at least happy Avatar didn't win. I don't know if I could have stood hearing new TV Spots for it saying, "Winner of X Academy Awards including Best Picture of the Year, see it again for the first time. Come be part of film history", or some tripe like that.

She meant that she didn't make the rounds promoting herself after the nomination like the other nominees, and there was no campaign on her behalf. But she still won.

Re: Awards Season 2009
I'll stick up for Martin and Baldwin. I thought they were fine hosts and though it was obvious I did like the "Paranormal Activity" send up. Other than them and a few other highlights already mentioned in this thread it was a pretty awful show. My wife and I are both quite happy Avatar didn't win. I don't loathe it like others here but I would have been pissed if it won.
And yes, that was interperative dance for The Hurt Locker.

Re: Awards Season 2009
I was wondering why the show's producers bothered with hosts at all. The role of host has seemingly been whittled down over the years; correct me if I'm wrong, but back in the day, didn't the host introduce every single presenter? These days the voiceover gods handle most of those, and last night even the typical opening comedy bit was farmed out to Neil Patrick Harris for some reason. All Martin and Baldwin did was a short opening monologue (duologue?) and a handful of one-liners and short bits sprinkled throughout the show. They went multiple extended stretches without being onscreen at all. What's the point?

Added to Matt's spot-on criticism above. This offensive little nugget also deserves special mention because awards, you know, have little if anything to do with the actual performance given.HistoryProf wrote:Monique just said "Aks" in her Q&A backstage. Truly oscar worthy.

Re: Awards Season 2009
Leaving aside the glaring omission of the even better Bright Star from the Best Picture line-up, I was more than pleased with The Hurt Locker winning last night. None of the other nine pictures were anywhere near as good (Prophet and White Ribbon on the other hand were; seems like hardly anyone saw the Argentinian winner in that category) and even if you didn't care much for The Hurt Locker, I don't think anyone in their right mind can have been displeased with Bigelow winning Best Director: her body of work is more consistently good than either Tarantino or her ex, especially the latter.

I wonder if White Ribbon and Prophet split the vote, allowing the Argentinian film to win it.

Re: Awards Season 2009
Don't buy that in the least. That very well could be true, but I don't buy it. After watching her win several other Awards, she seems so sure of herself being the 'best' this year.mfunk9786 wrote:She meant that she didn't make the rounds promoting herself after the nomination like the other nominees, and there was no campaign on her behalf. No matter if she meant that, she still was the most ungracious Acting Award winner in the show. I guess if she decided that is the way she wanted to be remembered, so be it.
Then again, it is quite hard to listen to most of the winners ramble on.

I think KB has some odd cult following. Looking at her resume I am constantly trying to find films that I somehow overlooked, but alas, they are not there.
I liked the 'Weight of Water' somewhat, and although I like Harrison Ford, I thought K-19 was quite forgettable. Near Dark was, well...fine for what it was.
I have heard otherwise sane people mention 'Point Break' as if it were a masterpiece.
Who knows.

Re: Awards Season 2009
It woudl be nice to think so, but really I think it's that this category is mostly voted on by a few hundred aging members of teh Academy who make the screenings of all 5 nominees and have very conservative tastes, leading to selections of classic "well-made" dramas as opposed to anything ground breaking or particularly memorable. I saw Secret of Her Eyes and Milk of Sorrow at the AFI Fest last year, and even between those, Milk of Sorrow was the more interesting film. They've improved the Foreign Language process to get the better films nominated, but they can't seem to fix the selection of the winner.kaujot wrote:I wonder if White Ribbon and Prophet split the vote, allowing the Argentinian film to win it.
Did anyone else note how this year they announced each winner by saying "the winner is" instead of "And the Oscar goes to" as it has been for many years. I prefer the traditional wording, as it tried to stress that it's not just who wins. It just seems tacky (well, tackier than needed, given the overall tackiness of the evening) to say "the winner is..."
And could they please kill the speeches honoring all 5 actor & actress nominees? I fnd those embarrassing, interminable. I mean, these are just performances in films, not Nobel Peace Prizes. Let all the winners have an extra 15 or 30 seconds to thank people instead.
And hwo ridiculous was it that when Rick Barry unrolled his sign when THE COVER won, they cut to a shot of Daniel Ellsburg and just stayed on it, while cutting the microphone for the director of the film. What did they think Barry was going to do if THE COVE won? One key point of the whole film was to show how he works for the cause by getting into the places where people oppose him, pr at least try to avoid dealing with it, and how he tries to raise consciousness...
