Everlasting Moments

Swedish master Jan Troell, director of the beloved classics The Emigrants and The New Land, returns triumphantly with Everlasting Moments, a vivid, heartrending story of a woman liberated through art at the beginning of the twentieth century. Though poor and abused by her alcoholic husband, Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen, in a beautifully nuanced portrayal) finds an outlet in photography, which opens up her world for the first time. With a burnished bronze tint that evokes faded photographs, and a broad empathetic palette, Everlasting Moments—based on a true story—is a miraculous tribute to the power of image making.

and crew

Yeah, I don't get it either. I saw this and it's a beautiful film. I don't want to buy this on DVD.

And as someone else posted elsewhere, it's available on Blu in Sweden.

I hate that AW loves this film. But he can't be wrong 100% of the time.

Unfortunately, the Swedish BD doesn't appear to have English subs.

There goes that idea....that makes Criterion's decision even more annoying.

Maybe some lobbying would make a difference here, as it did for A Christmas Tale, which was also originally announced as SD only.

I love the artwork on this one!

Icon has it out on dvd already - you can get it from Amazon UK for about £7. But apparently, footage may have been cut from this version - the dvd's runnning time does not match up with other listed running times and a poster from IMDB says he bought the UK dvd and believes that about 25 minutes was cut. A poster on Amazon UK also states that there is a problem with the subtitles.

I think this is one to avoid, even if Icon brought out a Blu version.

You can stop your email campaign. Both this and Close-up are also bumped to Blu.

I'm rooting for you, but I think Disney believes its their Jud Süß.

The name of the lead is Maria Heiskanen, not Eiskanen.

Caught this film over the weekend on Sundance. While it pales in comparison to anything that Bergman has done, I am a sucker for period films and really enjoyed the storyline. It did also pique my interest in Troell and some of his films, in particular Utvandrarna and Nybyggarna. I couldn't help but notice there are no dvd releases for these films, I would like to see them just because they feature the lovely Liv Ullman in what I consider to be her prime.

Well, there is a Swedish set here, which includes both films. No English subs, though.

Not sure about IFC's showing, but I was able to record it this past weekend off the Sundance Channel. I enjoyed the film quite a bit, actually, and look forward to checking out the supplements on the Criterion release.

Wow, that's one grainy film. I can see why Criterion might have hesitated to put it on Blu-ray, but I imagine it looks wonderful in motion.
