Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
Does any place sell the thin Scanovo cases that come in the Eclipse sets? This is getting ridiculous and Criterion is completely unhelpful replacing anything but their Blu-ray cases.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
Criterion's packaging replacement policy is typically limited to artwork (i.e. cover sleeves, digipaks, booklets). The replacement Blu-ray cases are an exception because obviously if you're discarding the cardboard case you need something to put everything in.

I believe the Scanovo cases are custom made for Criterion and unavailable through retail. The cases that swo17 linked to are good substitutes for the Eclipse cases, but (for future reference) you're not going to be able to find the figure-8 or Blu-ray cases anywhere.

Re: CBC article on Criterion Collection
Now that's being overly generous, 98% of covers are loathed in this thread, and that's rounding down a bit.cdnchris wrote:“You have to tailor to your tastes and what you think the market will like. Somebody’s always going to complain about something for sure. There’s a whole list on the Criterion forum about the cover art for the packages, and I swear to God that 90 per cent of the time, people hate what we did.”

I can confirm this. I e-mailed the factory and they phoned me asking a minimum order of 10,000 units. A little more than this forum could absorb in 50 years.Matt wrote:I believe the Scanovo cases are custom made for Criterion and unavailable through retail.

Just noticed that Amazon's listing for Summer Hours has slightly different art (green tinged instead of yellow).

Amazon and a couple of other websites always have this kind of problem/confusion. Their cover arts, acquired from the DVD production companies I assume, sometimes show a slightly bluish/greenish tone which rendered them unnatural. They are very easy to discern (such as here, here and here). I suspect it's a YCMB/RGB conversion thing but I can never find information to support the thought. :-kdadaistnun wrote:Just noticed that Amazon's listing for Summer Hours has slightly different art (green tinged instead of yellow).
This has been brought up in this thread before. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will chime in.

Looks like a CMYK > RGB issue. Colours settings used for printing (CMYK) are different to what display on our screens (RGB) and can look like colour ink deficient inkjet prints when converted to RGB on the fly by certain software (usually PCs!)

That should answer the color/"is this a digipack!?" concerns. Taken from Criterion's Twitter or- http://ow.ly/i/Rbk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

*Cues best Patrick Bateman impression in reference to Vivre sa vie*
Look at it; the off-white coloring; the subtle blue font; the tasteful slimness of it; oh my god, it even has becoming white trim...
Can't wait to pop that baby in the ol' player and slide its beauty of a case alongside all my other Criterion Godards. Looks fantastic.

Take away that flower pattern on the Summer Hours booklet and it would have been a fantastic cover for the case.

Seriously, who saw that booklet and the cover and thought "Hey, this tropical bar napkin design will sell way better than a girl on the cover"Murdoch wrote:Take away that flower pattern on the Summer Hours booklet and it would have been a fantastic cover for the case.

Think it was the same one who thought Monica Vitti wouldn't be able to sell more copies of Red Desert.domino harvey wrote: Seriously, who saw that booklet and the cover and thought "Hey, this tropical bar napkin design will sell way better than a girl on the cover"

Until I checked Beaver's review, I never knew that Binoche was in the Assayas film. That's what I get for not checking the cover of the DVD. Oh wait...

Criterion should just have hired the art staff of Anthropologie for this thing.domino harvey wrote:Seriously, who saw that booklet and the cover and thought "Hey, this tropical bar napkin design will sell way better than a girl on the cover"

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
I don't think it's a particularly exciting cover, but I do think it fits the mood and the palette of the film. Also, the design that's "double-exposed" with the picture of the house is not a "tropical bar napkin design," it's a (real) painting that figures prominently in the film. I'd have preferred Criterion had chosen either the painting or the house as the cover image, not both, but it doesn't look ugly to me at all.
And it's probably a bad commercial decision to not put Binoche on the cover, but she's not the main character, and just one of several supporting characters. Her face is on the cover of every other French DVD, she doesn't need to go on this one too (though she is arguably the best part of this movie, a perf worth comparing to her role in Flight of the Red Balloon).
Ugh I sound like such an apologist. I love this movie, and I'll be getting the DVD no matter what. Somber cover for a somber film. Good enough for me.

To be fair though, the missus is buying more Criterions in the next three months than I am!

The film or the packaging?
