So far the releases announced are minor as an overall slate. Perhaps a biggy is yet to come.

Silly speculation... What will come will come gradually... A consistent flow of Kurosawa, Ozu, Renoir, Fellini, Godard, Bergman, Antonioni etc. plus all the others.... On average 2 box sets a year, so one to come in this...

No, but The Flowers of St. Francis, Harakiri, and Boudu Saved from Drowning are.

That's not an accurate statement of the consensus among auteurists on St. Francis or Boudu. But I won't shed any tears if this Rossellini is the first of many.

I don't agree that they are 'minor' films, but I'm disappointed at least one of them isn't a 2-discer... with commentary and feature length doco.

Regardless, I'm still gonna buy 2 out of 3 of them based on what we know of them at the moment... but I think the actual specs make the releases seem 'minor'.

The coming soon page looks kinda lackluster right now (not that I have issues with the film selection, but you have to admit, there are no 'knock 'em dead' packages). If they do stick with only the three August releases, I'm predicting something massive in September - Ozu or Rohmer box anyone? Ford AND Eisenstein? What do you have up your sleeve, Criterion, you sneaky bastards?

Dreaming is nice, and this IS a random speculation thread.

I'm personally hoping Mizoguchi gets a boxed set this Fall...a box of his pre-war films would be ideal, especially if such a set would include in-depth research material regarding lost films, including stills, archived reviews, and any surviving fragments. By the way, what silent film/s, besides Diary of Osen and Water Magician, survive in tact?

I'm beginning to suspect that Criterion is, indeed, working on an Ozu box, as well...The Only Son is long overdue, as is any new release, period.

Not that I'm disinclined to believe that September will include some nuclear-powered releases, but I'm thinking its a mistake to call a Rosellini and a Renoir an unimpressive month.

Hence the parenthetical....

Rosellini and Renoir are not unimpressive, but the fact that they are both lower-tier releases and we still aren't certain why the third release is upper-tier makes a rather unimpressive month by the standards Criterion have been setting this year.

I'm not trying to be greedy, I'm very happy with August. I'm just trying to play off of precedent.

It's not the releases, but the fact that there is only three. I'm greedy. I want a minimum of 5 so my wallet can get light every month.

For whatever it's worth, a source tells me that in addition to AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS, Criterion has acquired Malle's THE LOVERS and ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS. So we could be looking at a wave of Malle films coming, as well.

Sounds interesting. Those two were previously New Yorker owned and they replied that they no longer had any rights to any Malle. Damage is also forthcoming according to rumors.

I'm not the world's biggest Malle fan, but The Lovers will be an excellent edition to the Criterion catalog. They should include a beefy book of contemporary essays/reviews. Maybe Rohmer's?

An excellent documentary that I'd never imagined appearing on DVD... hopefully Criterion will give us both the 7 hour and the (shorter) theatrical versions.

This has just been released in France by Arte, the 8 x 52 minutes India, and the two hours Calcutta, but with no English subtitles, and I am glad I held off purchasing it.

I've never seen ANY Malle other than the most obvious American releases. After reading this, consider me VERY intrigued.

A true Master of Cinema, Malle made some amazing films, most of them not on DVD in any country. Rialto own Elevator to the Gallows, so we should see a Criterion DVD in the near future. I'd love to see The Fire Within as a Criterion, also, but ol' lazy bones New Yorker still own the rights.

I, like most others, have not seen Phantom India. At 6h 18m, it will probably be a 3-disc set with extras.

I don't know about that because they said they didn't own any rights to Malle in a response to me a few months ago. Maybe they didn't know what they were talking about.

There is a high chance we could see Lacombe, Lucian via CristaldFilm. They been licensing a lot lately from them.

Along with the apparent acquisition of PHANTOM INDIA and the spine number switch on AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS, a Malle box would appear to be on the horizon.

Phantom India might be a box - it'd hafta be at least several discs. And who knows, maybe a couple other docs will be tacked on. But I highly doubt Enfants and India will be packaged together.

This is obviously why "Au Revoir Les Enfants" was postponed. They must have either a box set planned, or at least a block of Malle titles.
