Can't recall the specific source (and too lazy to search), but I thought that Criterion had undertaken to release all of the Scorsese World Cinema Foundation restorations? (Not that we've actually seen any hard evidence of this yet.)Peacock wrote:Do you have a source for that zedz? Ultimately, the films will be made available on DVD in collectors’ box sets through a partnership with the Criterion Collection, who will also select a few titles each year to distribute as individual special-edition releases.

So much for being optimistic. I suppose I can dream, along with my Rivette and Eisenstein box.

It may be terrible that the Ray's aren't in print now, but A River Called Titas hasn't been released in an English friendly edition yet and it is a sign of Criterion going outside of their comfort zone. Also we have to appreciate the pain in the ass that the rights for the Ray films may be. I say the more old school Indian the better even if it's not the cream of the crop.

There's the still-available BFI region 0 disc released a few years back (here).knives wrote:...but A River Called Titas hasn't been released in an English friendly edition yet and it is a sign of Criterion going outside of their comfort zone.

A gentlemen on the .com forums posted this link to the NY Times Summer DVD preview, which mentions that the Von Sternburg set comes out in August and House in September.

so I heard Once upon a time in the west was restored by Scorsese. Any chance Criterion can/will/have snatch it up?

Where the hell did they get that? Not to mention Cat Ballou and Robin and Marian. Haven't these been out on DVD for ages?mteller wrote:25th anniversary? A little early for that, no?New York Times wrote:On July 6... a 25th-anniversary edition of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.”

Von Sternberg in August makes sense, they usually release big boxsets that month!

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
I'm sure that Taylor and Zacharek just contacted distribs to send them a list of what they would be releasing over the summer and those two were listed because they are getting a new price or promotion. Promoting Robin and Marian early next month makes sense because it will tie in with the Ridley Scott Robin Hood film. Not sure what the deal would be with Cat Ballou. It could just be getting repriced which would cause it to be mentioned on Sony's sell sheets.Feego wrote:Cat Ballou and Robin and Marian. Haven't these been out on DVD for ages?

They also have Man From Laramie listed, which has been out for years and is also part of one of Sony's "Triple Feature" bargain discs.Feego wrote:Where the hell did they get that? The Man From Laramie is in at least three different "packs" that I know of, it's certainly a title they like to throw in for the heck of it
