For a while there were few enough Blu-Ray titles that I can see that it might have made some sense to just treat it as a genre. (Since it was probably much easier to add another genre than to add a whole parallel section, purely from a software engineering POV.)

It's probably reaching the point where it really should be a parallel section with its own genre subdivisions.

well this thread has inspired me to switch from alphabetical for all titles to a chronological by release year system. I do keep the Criterions separate and ordered by Spine #, as well as the blu rays which are after the CC discs. Then I have a row of box sets, followed by documentaries, and then the rest (500+) that are features all alpha....but I think it's time to go back to chronological, primarily because i've been on a serious black and white classics kick of late and keep having to fire up my Profiler db to look at what I have in that category!

I wonder as well if someone has the original Kevyip thread bookmarked? It took a while to figure out what exactly everyone was talking about...but i'd still like to see the origination of the term as it is used here. searching only turned up others using it as the noun for "unwatched dvd excess" that it seems to have become.

Oh, and I think i'm also going to go ahead and start putting perhaps a quarter to a third of my collection in sleeves - stuff that's worthless to get rid of and nice to have around for whomever might be here and isn't interested in headier stuff that I prefer. and just because I adore documentaries and whatnot, doesn't mean I also don't enjoy owning such childhood landmarks as Hot Dog! The Movie ;)

It's here, third post down. I had to search for it - honest!

i just found that myself after trying again...oddly enough when i searched "kevyip" it doesn't appear...but i searched his username and it popped right up! Kudos to the mods for merging it all together in one vast thread of idiocy! =D>

edit: can't quite put my hands on it right now: as I don't have too many Frankenheimer films and its a US film I may have filed it with a number of 'orphan' category US films.

But after watching Oshima's 'Double Summer' now might be the time to catch up on other great favourite b&w films which I've not yet seen in DVD: 'Seconds' and Kurosawa's gorgeous 'Stray Dog'
(the latter in good time for The Noir List)
Did I read this correctly as: you can't find your copy of Seconds because it's not where your card catalog says it should be and it's easier to look it up on Amazon than browse through the various rooms of your library?

(how many films do you have?)

You did indeed, Jun
But I don't have a card catalog: I've stored my DVDs in various locations in my home: mostly grouped by director, country, genre; then Masters of Cinema, - apart from the Pialat films, - Criterions and silent films are stored together.
As are major genres, like film noir, Westerns, sci-fi,........................................EUREKA!!!!!!!!,.......

yep, commentary by director, John Frankenheimer!

I was about to lambaste you for your crazy cataloguing system until I realised it was only slightly more complicated than the (completely rational, natch) one I was using until about six months ago. Now I have almost everything alphabetical by director.

Kidding! Actually, I keep all my DVDs buried in the garden, catalogued by treasure map.

so how many DVDs do you have to move each time you buy one?

Yojimbo - this is exactly the problem I had when I alphabetized everything over several cabinets, I buy around ten dvds/BDs a week and everytime I shuffled all the various rows along each time, i'd leave an extra gap at the end to save me moving them along so much, but yeah, it's incredibly grating!
Currently I have everything in a variety of boxes and cabinets in no order (apart from my kevyip is kept separately)
But my plan is to someday cover a couple of walls in shelves and put everything in chronological order - anyone have any tips to avoid the domino-effect?

This is why I want a library wall with a ladder and everything. I'll just put a chair facing the shelves and never watch another movie ever again, content to sit and stare at all my DVDs

I feel almost embarrassed admitting that I got rid of my ~200 DVD collection, and now have only a couple dozen Blu-rays (including Planet Earth). I pretty much just rent from NF for Blu-ray and borrow DVDs from the local library (they have pretty much every CC), and the only titles I buy any more are those that I can rewatch frequently, put on in the background when I'm working, or somehow justify as helping me learn Japanese.

That said, I do remember the joys of periodically reorganizing my collection. Chronological one day. Alphabetical by director the next. Once I even did it by the spine's general position on the color spectrum.

Most of my DVD collection is out of sight, so that visitors, particularly those who don't go snooping around and looking under the beds, and in wardrobes, etc, etc won't become immediately aware of my little 'problem'!

No one else placing the films by year, then alphabetically?

10 DVDs/Blus per week, Peacock? And I thought I was bad.

After many years of careful observation, I have scientifically deduced that I have a tendency to buy more DVDs, so I try to allow a decent amount of wiggle room at the end of each shelf, and at the moment I've got several entire shelves free or evacuable at the end of the alphabet for the inevitable shunt.

(Separately shelved and less of a problem: series (Criterion, MoC, Second Run, Filmmuseum, PWA, BFI BluRay etc., by number), television (by title) and non-movie music discs (by artist), with multi-director boxes (by title) arrayed along the top of the bookcases - yeah, that's a lot of exceptions.)

And I'm very disappointed that nobody bought the treasure map story.

Yes, I've always done that with commercial single DVDs, but I'm now thinking of changing to by director so I can gather my "complete" set of Hitchcocks together and the many other films that for me are auterist works. But for those I collect more for star, genre, etc. I'll group according to those categories. Not as neat as chronological, but as I get older I forget the year of many films!

I could once have told you even the exact running times of hundreds of films (too much poring over film guides in my youth) but memory is now starting to fail! If it fails enough, maybe I'll at least have the pleasure of watching my favourites as if for the first time again...

I organize my collection by director and then year. I keep documentaries, tv series and anime on the side.

The Great Adaptations Criterion boxset, the Warner Tennessee Williams collection and others are after letter Z because they have multiple directors.

I tried doing that, but then I kept forgetting who directed GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA, so I dropped it.

I just put my DVDs wherever there's free shelf space, it's easier that way and I hate being organized.

I got a DVD rack from Argos for 75£ delivered, but it proved too small for my needs. Does anyone now any cheap solution that can hold more than 1K of cases?

I wonder what you do with filing Artificial Eye DVDs on a shelf. If you mix them with others the writing on the spine is upside down. So I keep them all separately, they're nothing to look at anyway.

You could file them upside down. I don't think I actually do that with my AE discs (I just let the spines grate on my nerves), but I've done it before with CDs.
