That Naruse set is even cheaper! Glad I waited.

Wow, the Savage Innocents- hasn't that been out of print for years? I'm tempted in spite of my enormous backlog of new Criterions (and the price tag).

Their price is 17£, a couple of months ago they were selling it for 13£.

If there was ever a reason to get a region-free player, this is it! Absolutely great set that I bought at twice the sale price here. The price now is a total bargain and it gets you some top shelf Naruse.

And if you can't afford a region free player -- but have a PC DVD drive, there is free (and safe) software that lets you watch DVDs from anywhere.

If you like Japanese cinema (beyond historical adventures), this Naruse set is a must-have.

Don't want a second player for my home theatre. Maybe if I saw the films first.

So -- your computer does not have a DVD drive?

Well, Macs made in the last few years won't even read the drive if it's in a different region, so the VLC solution is out for a lot of us

I wonder if my postman is going to be angry at me in the following weeks for having to bring me so many packages. Maybe I should mow the lawn more often as a sign of appreciation. Either way, looks like he have a Naruse box set to deliver now.

Earlier this summer, in the heat of OOP Mania, had around forty different packages delivered in one week. I hope no one ever tops that

I'm running short on money so I'll probably just buy Nightmare Alley and Kuroneko, even though the Naruse set is very tempting.

Just a friendly reminder that Criterion is releasing Kuroneko in the near future if you want to wait.

Has anyone seen the MoC discs of Judex/Nuits Rouge? It'd be a blind buy, but it's tempting- the dvdbeaver listing didn't seem particularly informative, though.

Does anybody recall how much the Fantastic Planet / Vengeance Is Mine Blu's were in the previous sale? They're £15.88 each now, and I seem to remember they were £11.99 before, but it might have been one of them dreams of mine... Thanks!

No, they were 15.88£, Profound Desires was 12.99£ but never a new blu-ray MoC title has been 11.99£ (only DVDs, but then they didn't raise the prices on them)

I'd rather buy the MoC, but thank you.

I'd check the Judex thread for more info, there's a few gushings there. I can't vouch for either of the films (gonna buy them this sale I hope), but I do love Franju based only on the Criterion Eyes Without a Face/Blood of the Beasts disc. If you have easy access to that disc, via Netflix or something, try it out. Great great stuff.

Macs will read it but as you know they're allowed five opportunities to do so. After that, the drive region code is set in place, requiring servicing in order to reset it to zero. And actually, even with current machines, VLC will play some discs, but unfortunately nowhere near enough to be considered a reliable solution.

Another workaround is using an external DVD drive. These are inexpensive and should have no problems circumventing the region blocking.

This is true, but you can still usually rip said DVDs to your hard drive and then play the resulting VIDEO_TS folder in Apple's DVD Player app or what have you. Not a great solution but it works if you ever find yourself without a region-free player and need region-free playback.

The pound sign comes before the number, eg. £17. £13.

So now you know. :)

I know, but because i was raised in a country that we put the euro sign after the currency, i forget not to do the same for the pound!
