Honestly, I'm glad they decided to decrease the prices of the DVDs.
I just hope the cost of BR manufacturing will decrease soon, and maybe with it, the price of CC BRs.

Anyway, for now, CC DVDs are cheaper than CC BRs, which seems logical to me.

This. I have yet to get a Blu-Ray player but I'm glad Criterion shows mercy to DVD owners who haven't made the jump.

nope. that's actually a point I made in my comment on the fb announcement: That it was time to drop the price of anything released more than 5 years ago or so, as the prices on the earliest releases are especially ridiculous at this point. Certainly the accounting of those was written off long ago, and if they are reprinting something from the<100 spine #s, they aren't doing it for the same costs they were in 1999! It's silly that discs like The Blob, or Brief Encounter, or the Lean Dickens, etc are priced that high. There was a time it wasn't, but that has long past.

huh...Green For Danger is indeed at the $29.99 point on criterion's site, but I know for a fact that was originally $39.99, and it still is everywhere else on line (As is The Blob). interesting.

I've seen discrepencies like that in the past at B&N. One in my town had Green For Danger and Tanner 88 both priced at $40 for a while. Wings of Desire was $50 for a while too locally.

Actually, Criterion's website is saying the msrp on Tanner is $40 now, and I'm 100% positive it used to be $30, since I bought it at that price (and that's still the B&N listing price.)

I wonder if they're going through and ironing out some pricing oddities- it seems like, if they were doing that, the barebones $40 price points should be the first dropped.

Coincidence that some of those are Bluray and others rumored for Bluray- sign that the rest will go Bluray? Bluray.

I'll be shocked if Fishing with John goes blu, since it's not on film- is it even possible to upgrade the video quality there?

Odd mix of titles there. Still haven't picked up the Gimme Shelter or For All Mankind Blu-rays...those prices might make me bite on the DVDs at 50% off. Will definitely pick up Down By Law too...that's one I sold off a long while ago and have since regretted it.

If you buy For All Mankind on DVD you'll just end up buying it again on BluRay. It's glorious. (Actually, I'd say the same for Gimme Shelter, but I know the grain thing is an acquired taste.)

This is a heartening sign, but it seems a little weird since none of those are among Criterion's most egregiously overpriced titles (-ahem- Great Expectations, Oliver Twist).

Aren't new Leans rumored to be coming out in the relatively near future? I could've sworn I read that on here somewhere.

This could be a sign of future Blu-editions for these titles—though it's highly unlikely with the shot-on-video Fishing with John—but it could also be these titles all recently had to go through some fresh printings, so Criterion thought hey, why not drop the prices on them? Maybe some of the older titles will get the new amray design, as well.

Strange- The Magician on DVD seems to have been bumped up to a $29.99 price point. I wonder if that means anything.

Hoop Dreams is also video (Hi-8). A Blu-ray would theoretically be more transparent to the source, but I can't imagine Criterion would bother.

According to the link above, the price drop will be done on November 9th for those seven films. Although I think it's about time for this to happen I wonder if we are going to see a decrease in Criterion sales in 2011. Also, I wonder what pace they are going to take to include more titles in the price drop.

They should drop ALL their DVDs to $29.95 and the lower tier ones to $19.95. I thought Short Cuts had its RRP lowered last year, with the first round of reductions...

It was reduced when it was reissued, I guess their way of making up for the fact you now get less even though it wasn't their fault; the book was discontinued by the publisher.

Hoop Dreams and A Night to Remember are listed at Image web site with 2/28 release date with $14.98 price tag.
I'm not sure if this is a price drop.

This may not be the thread for this, but Costco is currently selling The Thin Red Line, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor, and !2 Angry Men blu-rays for $20 each. However, rather than Criterion's casing, they're in the standard blue blu-ray cases. I'm not sure where this is coming from, either, since two of these are from Hanway, one's from MGM, and one's from Fox. Anyone have information about this?

Thought I'd read that the Last Emperor was still in the cardboard case, but this makes "more" sense. Reading further, it seems like could be some clear cases out there as well.
