Robert A Harris was enthusiastic about it. Beaver liked it. The Blu-ray.com video rating was 4.5.

Seemed like most of the reviews were overwhelmingly positive, even if the peanut gallery that is this forum didn't like it much.

Totally stand corrected and retract my statement!

I just wish now I remember why I felt this release was controversial. :-k I seem to remember bitching about it ala The Searchers and Patton.

There are some very negative comments about it on theNorth by Northwest 50th Anniversary edition thread
Especially

I wouldn't go as far as Monsieur Hare, but it is a major disappointment. I don't see how anyone could think otherwise.

David Hare has shown time and again expert knowledge with regards to replication of color and print quality on home video. A cursory reading of any of his contributions to the threads devoted to musicals should be enough to give him some credit

I never underestimated David Hare's expertise or evaluation, but i just can't believe that Mr. Harris can be so wrong.

David, speaking of To Catch a Thief, which DVD do you think has the best transfer? Now that Paramount's taking everything out of print, I need to pick it up tout de suite.

Lionsgate/Maples will release "Apocalypse Now" (with "Hearts of Darkness") on Blu-ray in October so I guess we can hope for other American Zoetrope films on Blu-ray....

Whoa. Just Whoa.

The two cuts along with Hearts of Darkness (and by extension, presumably everything on the Complete Dossier)?

Wake me up! US release, please.

Let's wait to see what aspect ratio Storaro is wanking off to before we get overly excited. Does HD cancel the rationale for 2:1?

I highly doubt it. He'll probably like that it alsmost fills out the screen.

Curious they managed to sneak that out with such little fanfare, must be because it's a little known indie-film which few people would be interested in.

Sorry to rehash an old quote, but I thought this was interesting. Have you seen Harris's Vertigo resto? Doesn't get much more wrong than that.

The Criterion Last Emperor says otherwise.

Hearts of Darkness was mastered (and partially shot) on SD video, so I'm curious to see how it'll be handled. The bulk is 16 and 35mm, so that could be remastered in HD and mixed with upscaled SD content -- but that would be awfully ambitious since they would pretty much have to re-edit the whole thing. Was this going to be a separate release or was it bundled with AN? I can't tell for sure with the Amazon links gone.

So I have blu-ray on my laptop but the software I used has stopped working (the Dell MediaDirect program, which was terrible to begin with). Since it stopped working I've still been buying blu-rays indiscriminately, so I now have ten or so discs I'm unable to watch. I'd like to remedy this.

Can anyone recommend blu-ray software for a PC? I'm willing to spend what I need to get a reliable program, but of course the cheaper the better so long as the quality doesn't drop substantially. I don't need any fancy doo-dads, just a straightforward, functional program. Thanks.

I also heard his name mentioned specifically as an at-fault party when discussing Coppola's hold up of US showings of Brownlow's NAPOLEON restoration (which Harris butchered decades ago on its last US release). Man holds no pull with me.

PowerDVD from Cyberlink. Just google them. They have 3 weeks or a months trial, so just start with the trial. It has worked flawlessly for my blu-ray playback from my computer the last 1½ year.

Apocalypse Now has been offically announced!
With new transfers supervised directly by Coppola, Apocalypse Now will premiere on Blu-ray in two deluxe editions: the 2-Film Set and the 3-disc Full Disclosure Edition. The 2-Film Set will include both Apocalypse Now - The 1979 Cut and Apocalypse Now Redux and will also include over nine hours of special features. The Full Disclosure Edition will include the seminal making-of documentary Hearts of Darkness, a 48-page collectible booklet and storyboard, photo and marketing archives.
