These screen shots and the amount of detail and effort continue to show why Warner is leading the way in regards to releasing and protecting America's filmic history. I applaud the desire by the company to bring to the marketplace something which may seem irrelevant in today's standards but is of vital historical importance for academia and fans alike. I hopefully will be picking this up with my birthday money.

Looks like Warners got cold feet over the WWII cartoons.

Or maybe they realized by making this a two-disc set instead of a three disc, which would have covered all the Fleischer toons, they can get the people who only want the Fleischer's to cough up more money with the third set. Which will have the last Fleischer's and the beginning of the Famous Studios toons, thus linking the series.

vol. 3 announced for September 30th.

The Popeye the Sailor - Volume 3: 1941-1943 2-disc set will contain 32 shorts. These are completely remastered, and unedited, and will consist of many of the wartime shorts (an exact list of the included titles is not yet available). No word yet on extras, if any. Cost is $34.98 SRP.

Of the 34 shorts, only 32 will make it on this set with You're a Sap, Mr. Jap and Scrap the Japs expected to be withheld due to political correctness.

According to Wikipedia, the last two color films will probably not be on this set (Her Honor The Mare, The Marry-Go-Round) because they were the first color films:

Popeye the Sailor: 1941-1943, Volume 3 is the third of a series of theatrical Popeye cartoons distributed to theaters by Paramount Pictures to be released on a DVD set by Warner Home Video. This two-DVD set is scheduled to be released on September 30, 2008.[1]

This collection will have 32 cartoons and covers the transition from Fleischer Studios to Famous Studios producing the cartoons with 18 Fleischer cartoons and 14 Famous cartoons. It is likely that all of the cartoons included will be black-and-white, meaning every cartoon produced from 1941 through 1943 will be included with the exception of the last two from 1943 which were color.

So they are releasing two per year, leaving three more sets with a little more shorts either on the third set or evenly divided on the next sets. Obviously, they will release the television series seperate. The way I see it, by 2010, we should see the all the theatrical shorts released.

The remainder of the COLOR Famous Studio Popeye shorts will be handled differently, which is not to say they won't be treated with equal care and effort... but it's a separate chapter that closes with the release of Vol. 3. If you think about it, this was really a benchmark as the first major studio release of any "official" collection of black & white cartoons on DVD. The color sets, I believe (but could be mistaken) will be promoted to a more general audience as I think WHV assumes the market is larger and there's greater sales potential with the color Famous cartoons.

Why does Warner not understand the cultural and historical value of these two cartoons "Your A Sap Mr. Jap?" To continue to ignore of deny their existence merely obfuscates the reality that when dealing with many global issues the US is notorious for using race and racist based depictions to embolden and energize the citizenry. These cartooons deserve to be released, perhaps as a special set because film scholars and future generations need access to them so that we can better understand our past in order to chart a more progressive future.

I got my info from Classic Flix, but Jerry Beck confirms what Cinephrenic said -

Will contain all the rest of the black and white Popeye cartoons including all the wartime cartoons uncut, uncensored.

I can't believe that Jerry Beck is still encouraging the purchase of this DVD. Usually, he's the first one to rant about removing those two cartoons!

Jerry is saying that the cartoons are present on the set. He has always been an advocate of uncut, uncensored collections. He was a consultant on all the Popeye sets, so I'm taking his word for it.

That's awesome! I wonder how much warnings and Asian equivalent of Whoopi Goldberg is going to be included. Now I can hope for a Looney Tunes box set of the banned cartoons...
