Circumstances out of our control have conspired against the early release of these I'm afraid, but planning and background work have been taking place throughout. Deffo going to be separate releases (not a box) and looking at Blu-ing the one that was shot on film.NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Nearly six months on and am getting itchy for another fix of Costa. Any news on whether Blu is contemplated for the new titles or is it a straight choice between MoC single issues and the Criterion box?

So that hopefully means a maybe for Ossos on blu, since In Vanda's Room and Colossal Youth were shot on DV and O Sangue and Casa de Lava are/will be released by Second Run.peerpee wrote:Deffo going to be separate releases (not a box) and looking at Blu-ing the one that was shot on film.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Probably more a possible Eureka than a MoC title, but here goes anyway: Nick, Kevin, would you guys please consider looking into Kenji Misumi's 1962 film Destiny's Son? It's scripted by Kaneto Shindo and considered one of Misumi's best films. Tom Mes at Midnight Eye wrote a nice appreciation of Misumi (including a paragraph on Destiny's Son) that could be used for Lone Wolf and Cub-style sleeve notes. Destiny's Son has only been released in Japan and France (of course in non-English-friendly versions!), and could be ported over easily, I imagine. A DVD would be nice enough, but a Blu even better!
Also wanted to share this eloquent description of Misumi's work from Mes' article:

This person - a close collaborator of Akira Kurosawa - once said to me that "as a young boy, watching Toei sword-movies was exciting; you left the theatre wanting to seize a piece of wood and stage fake fights with your friends. But watching Misumi's sword movies was like plunging into a well of sadness and melancholy which never left you untouched."

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
It's been talked about elsewhere on the forum so I'm sure that Nick and co. are already aware of the very real interest in just such a hypothetical release, but I'm going to ask the question directly anyway: is there any chance at all that MoC would be able to put out the three Sternberg silents that Paramount holds? I've no idea whether that company is open to licensing their properties to parties outside of the US, but it's sad to think that Criterion's masters aren't going to be represented to their best effect on BRs. Even a DVD release sans pictureboxing would be very welcome.

Will it be MoC's last DVD, before they switch to BD only?Der Spieler wrote:Please announce DVD #100!

No, Nick mentioned elsewhere that they have 3 DVD titles planned for next year. Whether those will be the last, I don't know. I imagine they'll continue releasing DVDs whenever appropriate.

Hi all! TLE-Films has restored some 60s Otto Preminger titles on behalf of the owner, Ignite Films -

Looks Blu-worthy to me, at least some of the titles. Maybe of interest to MoC... Nick? Comments?
According to Torsten Kaiser of TLE, posting on HTF, these are not the masters used by WB in R1.

A small coterie of Edinbuggers revving up to see Usher tomorrow has spurred me on to ask about how the Epstein deal is shaping up?

Confirmation of whether Usher would be part of any deal would be most welcome, especially considering that the R1 is OOP and goes for hefty prices.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
There's been no movement on the situation with the one Epstein we hope to release. There are multiple issues with USHER and others but we could be old men before anything's resolved, the French don't move quickly.
We'll be announcing two new titles (for Jan or Feb release) at the end of September, all being well. Both by the same man.

Shame about the Epstein but hopefully you are referring to Pedro Costa which softens the blow.peerpee wrote:There's been no movement on the situation with the one Epstein we hope to release. I don't see why they wouldn't, though I've never heard them mention it.

A suggestion for next year or 2012: Me and My Gal, an early 30s Fox title by Raoul Walsh at least on DVD though preferably Blu.

I'd be happy if January's two-Blus-by-one-guy turned out to be this, and The Bowery.Finch wrote:A suggestion for next year or 2012: Me and My Gal, an early 30s Fox title by Raoul Walsh at least on DVD though preferably Blu.

If the two films by the same man end up being Buffalo '66 and The Brown Bunny, I may explode (with joy).

I would be very happy with Kon Ichikawa's "Enjo" and "Kagi", but I can't see it happening, alas.

I would crawl around on my bare knees exclaiming my love for MoC and everyone involved if the man behind the two films is Victor Sjöström
