It seems likely, given that there were reports that he first prepared a version closer to three hours before creating this 135 minute cut, as well as the quote from Mike Fink last year that two different cuts (of differing lengths) of the film were being prepared.

I get the impression that Malick does not want to limit the accessibility of his pictures through runtime, but likes to leave the door open to viewing an extended version for those who actually enjoy his work and wish to delve deeper into it. Plus, rather than being forced to commit to certain editorial choices by producing only one cut, preparing multiple versions of his films allows him to indulge his desire to experiment with the pros and cons of different ways they can 'flow'.

I would really like to see a trailer for this before the end of the damn calendar year, if not earlier. I mean, seriously, give us a break. Or, at the very least, some isolated footage, like the ShowWest (?) clip from Eyes Wide Shut. Something, Jesus Aitch Kryst! It's not annoying any more, it's not funny any more, it's not absurd any more -- it's just a profound failure bordering on offensive. Yes, I know people are starving, people are killing people, all the pain and suffering in the World, blah blah blah... But a little clip from this film might remedy all that! Believe it! Give it to us, brothers! I need a hot Malick injection right about now -- IT'S BEEN SIX YEARS FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

Rumors about the project broke about four years ago. At that time, it was going to be filmed in India, and was to star Mel Gibson and Colin Farrell. It didn't actually start filming until March of 2008, and Malick turned in his "final" cut about six weeks ago. The total production time of two and a half years was only slightly longer than Days of Heaven. The only reason it's not out yet is that its original distributor disintegrated.

I beg your pardon, it's been said Tree of Life will hit in 2011 (likely late in the year). Even if it's released in the spring, that's 5 1/2 years.
