Wow, what a genuinely gratuitous Blu upgrade. I guess the people who really love this film can now ditch both the Blu they've bought, and the Criterion DVDs they've kept for the commentaries. At least it should sell well though.

Given that Fear and Loathing was, for a while at least, their best-selling title on DVD (if I recall correctly), regardless of Universal's duplication, I'm not surprised they'd want to see if lightning will strike twice on BluRay.

And I wouldn't be so quick to gang up on Criterion over this, Universal likely insisted on having the first crack at sales. I wouldn't be surprised to see Do the Right Thing and Dazed and Confused eventually.

Most Universal's catalog Blu-ray releases come from old and dated masters that are often heavily filtered. They are even worse than Warner...

Agreed. This is great news because it means that Universal isn't claiming sole dominion over the titles that they've already released on Blu-ray. Fear and Loathing isn't a personal favorite of mine, but if this means that Universal might let Criterion take a crack at Blu-rays of Spartacus, Traffic, and the aforementioned Do The Right Thing, I'm all for it.
