I really liked Fish Tank until I saw the motion-blur hand, and now I'm not so sure... still pretty good though. Sweet Smell of Success is great. Still Walking is rather pretty but it also seems a little boring. Senso is but one photoshop filter away from swimminghorses

Still Walking was probably my favorite film of 2009 (when it came out in the United States anyways) and I'm the last one to ever complain about the covers for DVD's, but the Still Walking one is atrocious. The font, the painting; it reminds me of bad literature or poetry that are either self-published or released on super small publishing house.

The only thing I dislike about the Still Walking cover is the font (boring indeed) but other than that, it ties with Sweet Smell for the best of the new covers.

Actually that's what I like about it. Besides the obvious depiction of her dancing, I think it captures her in all her anxiety and restlessness in a way that a more "still" still would have completely missed.eljacko wrote:I really liked Fish Tank until I saw the motion-blur hand, and now I'm not so sure...

I don't particularly mind any of the new covers, though nothing jumps out as great to me. Senso looks a little like Black Orpheus Redux and its fonts look cheap, which doesn't exactly communicate the class and opulence of the film.

Fish Tank is a masterful portrayal of a young woman being smothered by her circumstances when she should have the most room to breathe that she's ever afforded. The cover does a wonderful job portraying that claustrophobia.

The typography on Senso is hideous. Is it going to be embossed in a nice gold ink for an added bling effect too?

The funny thing about Senso is that, with the sticker placed where it is, it looks like he's holding up a big blue balloon. Maybe it's a Valli tie-in to the balloon salesman in The Third Man.

That Senso cover is indeed hideous. 2011 already has its Fanfan La Tulipe

My biggest problem with Senso is that for a film filmed with masterful compositions they use a cover with MSPaint-style confetti swirling around.

I think I saw that Senso cover is the paint-by-numbers section at the Hobby Lobby.

Fish Tank looks like an ad in Nylon magazine. That's a compliment, I think. Sweet Smell of Success is a noble failure.

Does that make Senso an ignoble failure?

Senso was released looking like that to distract us from Modern Times' release tomorrow

Wow, that is one hell of a month. With titles like these all released in one month, who am I to bitch about the covers?
Note: I actually think that the Senso cover is not too bad...

The Senso cover will make sense when you see it printed.

Senso is a travesty. I loathe how it passes off Visconti's firm grounding in the Italian artistic tradition as some kind of vintage camp.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I received (or, rather, LQ received) Night of the Hunter on Blu today. I am pretty shocked by how underwhelming the digi is. It's far too wide for what's inside (the booklet is startlingly slight after seeing how big the box is), and the cardboard used is lacking in texture or heft (think old BD cases rather than the Seven Samurai BD). From the look of the cover and the premium price, I suppose I expected something more. And yes, I realize that it's the discs that matter, but what better thread is there for looking a gift horse in the mouth?
