Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
so with Le Amiche announced, are there any obvious leads toward what the other Antonioni will be? If not, I wouldn't mind a Blow-Up blu. or proper Zabriskie. I acknowledge my complete obliviousness of rights issues.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Is Le Amiche not a potential Criterion title too? It's not on the speculation list, but as mentioned there's a new restoration touring and the old R1 Image DVD is barebones.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
LA SIGNORA SENZA CAMELIE is the other Antonioni most likely, does not exist in an English subbed edition on DVD or BR anywhere....

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Wonderful news about LE AMICHE; I would be happy with either CAMELIE or VINTI. MoC clearly did well with their earlier Antonionis, and are following that path.

There already exists an excellent comprehensive edition from Minerva Classics Italy, with English subtitles...Zazou dans le Metro wrote:Is I Vinti not a possibility?

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Thanks lips . I had already seen that listed at IBS but apparently only with italian subs (presumably for the french dialogue). I assume you can verify the english subs if you have a copy.ellipsis7 wrote:There already exists an excellent comprehensive edition from Minerva Classics Italy, with English subtitles...Zazou dans le Metro wrote:Is I Vinti not a possibility?
On the same site they have anew edition of Cronica coming in 2011..so perhaps?

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
The Minerva I VINTI has two soundtracks, the entirely Italian dubbed version, and the 'integral' international version with French, Italian and English soundtracks for the 3 episodes... The film was subject to quite a degree of censorship and quite a lot of editorial cutting due to the perceived controversial nature of the subject matter based on real incidents, the stages of which can be traced in the versions, from several treatments through to full facsimile script, including censor's report, as pdf files in the DVD-Rom features... While there is included as an extra the version of the Italian episode (Eng subbed) shown at the Venice Film Festival, but then axed immediately afterwards, and substantially rewritten, reshot and reedited for the full theatrical release.. As well as English subs, the booklet also includes several sections translated into English... The other DVD extras however are not subbed...

I vinti is getting a US blu-ray release by Raro in March.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Minerva Classics is a subdivision of Raro Video (It), so the US release by Raro Video USA is presumably from the same materials... It does then however open up the possibility that MoC might offer a first Region B I VINTI Blu...perkizitore wrote:I vinti is getting a US blu-ray release by Raro in March.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Great news on Le amiche been wanting this for quite a while and haven't wanted to pay for the severly overpriced crappy Image release. Definite pre-order for me! Now just announce La signora senza camelie on Blu also and make me very happy!

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
I'm confused by some of the comments above, where did Nick say it was going to be two films by the same director?

Ah yes! Sorry when Nick said "all new" a couple of days ago I presumed this was a new announcement as well for some reason! Wonder how long till Nick announces the other one....

...Dates back to January 6th last... Nick's reply then (CAMELIE was mentioned in another post in between)...ellipsis7 wrote:Nick, is MoC aware of this new (2009) resto of Antonioni's LE AMICHE? - would make an excellent DVD/Blu Ray, there's only the 2001 Image R1 about with Eng subs, which could do with improvement!...
LE AMICHE (1955, d. Michelangelo Antonioni) - Restored by Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata with funding provided by GUCCI and The Film Foundation. In Italian with English subtitles, 104 min.
We're on it. Thanks for the hot tips -- we looked into this a few years ago but weren't happy with the materials. Fingers crossed.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Nick, is there any chance of licencing Yamanaka's two surviving films, especially Pot Worth A Million Ryo, from Toho? Goes without saying that they probably won't be suitable for Blu-Ray but I'm sure many members would give their left arm and leg for a subbed DVD of this.

I second Finch on this, I'd love to see more of his extant work to place Humanity and Paper Balloons into a wider context.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Seconded. I keep my fingers crossed for Tange Sazen + Koyichama Soshun double pack (like Phantom/Grand Duke's or Judex/Nuits Rouges) - Nick mentioned few years ago that there's going to be other release of these films in UK but it never happened :(Finch wrote:I'm sure many members would give their left arm and leg for a subbed DVD of this.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Fourthed, however, I wonder if Criterion has the rights to all 3 and is planning an Eclipse? If this is possibly the case, as Yamanaka isn't well known in the West, perhaps Eureka are hesitant about releasing them if Criterion will take the US market?Finch wrote:I'm sure many members would give their left arm and leg for a subbed DVD of this.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
A "Surviving Films of Sadao Yamanaka" Eclipse would be grand, but that means we wont be able to get the extras from the Koichiyama Soshun DVD, the extracts of non-surviving films of his.
Plus, the Japanese release of Koichiyama Soshun is almost unwatchable or unlistenable...
It was really in rough shape.
