Damn, now that's some collection. Those covers are fuckin' awesome, too. They've got some angels helping them out: Filmarchiv Austria, Universität für angewandte Kunst, Wien, ZIT Zentrum für Innovation und Technologie GmbH - ein Unternehmen des Wiener Wirtschaftsförderungsfonds, Filmfonds Wien, Abteilung Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Niederösterreich, Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur (Sektion Kunst), Fachverband der Film&Audiovisionsindustrie, Erste Bank, SONY DADC, and wirtschaft. kunst und kultur gmbH (Wiener Wirtschaftsförderungsfonds). I'd think that Criterion would have to have that much support (and a chunk of this for index is financial) to get an experimental Eclipse line off the ground.

Because there's been a lot of speculation about Michael Snow releases lately, mostly due to clues in the drawing, it's worth mentioning again that Snow doesn't want his films released on DVD, so this isn't happening.

Jacques Rivette doesn't want Out 1 on DVD either.

Snow approved VHS releases of Diderot and Presents. I can't imagine why he'd disapprove of Blu releases other than it taking away from film rental revenue.

Meh. I'd rather see La religieuse be the first Rivette in the CC.

I know I read somewhere (but I can't, for the life of me, remember where) that Rivette has never wanted audiences to see Out 1 in any way except in a theater. This is mentioned on Wikipedia, but there's no source provided there either. I always assumed that the film would never make it to DVD for this very reason, and yet Criterion has dropped the hint that they're working on it, so it just goes to show that nothing is certain.

Whoa there, these things grow and grow; they simply said that they'll 'see what they can do' or something after originally replying to someone and asking if people would be interested in the title. So we can presume they have tried to get the film, but there's no proof they have it or are working on it...

The lack of Rivette on DVD alone is unacceptable.

An Eclipse set would surely suppress our angst for a bit. Perhaps Duelle, Noroit, and Merry-Go-Round in a box called "The Abandoned Myth of Jacques Rivette," or Love on the Ground, Gang of Four, Up-Down-Fragile, and Secret Defense in a box called "Four Meandering Mysteries."

A better title for an Eclipse set would be "we could only get the rights to these". lol

According to Film Forum's Spring Calendar, new 35mm prints of Truffaut's The Soft Skin and Ichikawa's The Makioka Sisters will be getting week-long runs courtesy of Janus Films.

Could these both be in-line for touring and subsequent Blu-rays?

I'd love a BD of "The Makioka Sisters" - cue Michael Kerpan to beat me over the head.

But any Ichikawa would be great, such as an Eclipse set, maybe, called " 5 Dark Comedies".

Not to get anyone's hopes up, but Film Forum will also be screening Carmen Comes Home, Dragnet Girl, The Life of Oharu, Floating Clouds, Flowing, Okaasan, Repast, and Yearning, as part of their 5 Japanese Divas series.

We probably get another Naruse and a Mizoguchi set this year on Eclipse. If we lucky, a Kinoshita or Ichikawa set.

I'd be surprised if we got any more Naruse this year. My jaw is still on the floor over the Eclipse set's announcement (though I'd love to see that Hideko Takamine box in the main line). But I'd also be surprised if we *didn't* get another Ozu set. We're long overdue for more of his silents, of which there are enough for at least two more Eclipse sets. Though it'd be nice if they, you know, found a way to get some in the main line.

I hope this does mean Makioka Sisters is due for a CC release. Also while we're at it throw in Enjo

I would estimate that Ichikawa made at least 20 better films than Makioka Sisters. As long as all these get released first, I have no problem with an eventual release of Makioka Sisters. ;~}

The Soft Skin would be awesome. After The Bride Wore Black, it's my favorite Truffaut that doesn't have a Criterion release.

I feel that if I Was Born, But... didn't make it into the main line, none of the other silents will. I have nothing to back that up though.

Even so, I agree. This is considered (rightly or wrongly) to be the most important of Ozu's surviving silent films -- and it is in better shape than most of the other silent films (except the surprising well-preserved Story of Floating Weeds -- which DID get a main line release). MY favorite silent (Tokyo Inn) is in such poor shape that I'd be happy to see it get even an Eclipse release.
