Just watched the John Travolta episode of SNL from 1995 - season 20 (NETFLIX). It's totally missing the QUENTIN TARANTINO'S "Welcome Back, Kotter" skit. ALso it seems to be about 10-15 minutes shorter than the others. Now i understand it if the music rights can be an issue but why would that segment be cut? It was a water cooler skit. Real popular...

I think the Tarrantino Kotter skit was actually from the MTV Movie Awards that year, not SNL.

RE: SNL

Anything past Season 5 is just "selected sketches" from the shows, not complete programs (it mentions this in the episode descriptions). I was somewhat disappointed to find that out myself, this past weekend.

Scanning the thread, I didn't see if this has been posted or not, but Kes is available for instant viewing, as is Jacques Audiard's A Prophet.

While it isn't a new addition, I watched Altman's California Split tonight and found that the streaming version is uncut and contains all the scenes and music missing from the Sony DVD.

Yep.

At least they're getting more pushback on this (relatively trivial) change than they seem to have expected. Maybe NF will realize that if people who primarily use mobile gadgets to program their queues still care about DVDs, then they can't be quite so quick to dump the last few film nerds and grandmas who still cling to their physical media.

No, it was SNL. I think Mike Myers was Mr. Kotter.

Unfortunately, as discussed here, the Netflix version is cropped from 2.35:1 to 1.85:1, unlike the DVD. You win some, you lose some.

Yup, though it does bear a striking resemblance to said MTV Movie Awards skit

Ah, I thought it was odd that the entire opening credits block played in 2.35 and switched to 1.85 immediately after, but figured it must've been intentional.

Does anyone know why Netflix isn't carrying Army of Shadows on Blu-ray? Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss also are unavailable in Blu without any mention of a date when they will be available.

They don't carry criterion blu-rays that are upgrades of existing DVDs. Even if the existing dvd they carry isn't criterion (see Night of the Hunter).

Among the bevy of later Dassin, I just noticed that Up Tight! is available. Also, It Rains in My Village was added awhile ago and is well worth checking out. Not sure if either of these have been mentioned.

My instant queue shows that Wenders's HAMMETT is only available until 2/1/11. At first I thought Instant View would be a great home for out of print titles, but the extremely short life span of this film (a few months) makes that wishful thinking.

I just wanted to note that they are only offering the pan-and-scan version of Abel Ferrara's New Rose Hotel to stream. That said, the DVD is dirt cheap on Amazon.com, perhaps appropriately listed at $6.66? Has anybody seen this title and can offer an opinion on it?

While you wait for the fan-requested late March Blu-ray release from Kino, the excellent Dogtooth is now available for instant viewing on Netflix.

was excited to find De Sica's Two Women available for streaming, hoping it wasn't as bad as the old version I tried watching a few years ago, only to find out it's worse: they are showing an English dubbed version for some damned reason. bastards.
