Yeah ... it's a wild card guess. There were rumours, and then debunkings, so who knows. I think it' s a possibility. Fox's DVD is decent by way of supplements, but I doubt it's on their Blu-Ray radar and I think it's great film; it and Tarkovsky's version are one of my favorite original+remake pairings.

Pale Flower (+BD)
Solaris (obv.)
Wild Strawberries (Blu upgrade)

arbitrary, wishful thinking:

Eclipse - Japanese New Wave: Art Theatre Guild
(Silence Has No Wings, Eros + Massacre, This Transient Life, etc)

Criterioncast is tweeting clips of the releases - it's looking like Smiles of a Summer Night for Bergman!

It's strange that they hinted Wild Strawberries but are making SoaSN the next Bergman.

Fat Girl and SoaSN are both originally $30 price point releases and relatively obscure, if those are getting blu'd (blown?) the floodgates are certainly open

Seconded. But if Pale Flower gets a BD, I forgive them x1000.

Why would they upgrade Fat Girl without The Last Mistress coming out the same month?

Fat Girl is the worst Criterion film I've ever seen, and that includes the Bays and Smith.

I'll give you Fat Girl, but Smiles of a Summer Night is not obscure, even relatively

Compared to the other Bergman that's been rumored? I'd say it's definitely less well known than Wild Strawberries or Fanny and Alexander.

Smiles is my favorite Bergman, and I'm very pleasantly surprised that it's next in the queue. I don't know if I'll ever get around to upgrading Fat Girl, but I'm pleased that Criterion seems to still have full control of the old Cowboy Pictures releases. I'm wondering if those didn't become Janus properties outright. The other two are the much better George Washington and Ratcatcher. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure, originally released on the Home Vision label was part of that arrangement too.

Yes. They posted Tokyo Story as a Blu upgrade one night before announcements. They also hinted at a new Essential Arthouse set.

I'm hoping that criterioncast hasn't gotten the entire list, and that a newer Breillat, The Last Mistress or Bluebeard (which the Criterion site published an interview about at one point) will accompany Fat Girl.

Fanny & Alexander, like Scenes from a Marraige or the Trilogy box is a big undertaking, so I expect it to take longer. Smiles of a Summer Night, Virgin Spring and Sawdust and Tinsel should be the easiest films to upgrade. Wild Strawberries and Cries and Whispers were probably mastered in 1080i for their initial DVD releases and thus have to go through a complete new mastering process. And we know Autumn Sonata (and probably Magic Flute as well) is getting a do-over edition. If criterion wants to get out more Bergman on blu, Smiles is one of the three easy titles to put out.

Fair enough- out of those three, I would have guessed The Virgin Spring, but horses for courses.

I can't wait for a Magic Flute upgrade, that's one of my favorite Bergmans and one of the most shameful Criterion discs.
