I watched the MGM disc last night and it'd be great if Milos Forman's Valmont entered the collection.

This would make a really interesting boxed set paired with Roger Vadim's Les Liaisons Dangereuses (which is out of print, no?). Both movies risk a certain amount of campiness, but they're serious enough when they need to be, and Valmont especially is just totally fun. Loads more fun than the 1988 Dangerous Liaisons, though in some respects not as satisfying.

The lack of Uma Thurman's tits being one. Yeah, I said it.

But seriously, the film definitely suffered from coming out a year after "Dangerous Liaisons" -- just as "Infamous" did coming out the year after "Capote."

The Macpherson and Bruckman raise some questions but the others seem fairly certain. I do hope it proves correct since a Bluray/redux of Closely Watched Trains is one of my dream upgrades.

The inclusion of Macpherson and Bruckman make this sound like a glitch to me. The Robeson set seems like just about the least likely set to be broken up for a one-film format upgrade, and isn't Bruckman's only collection credit one short film in the ancient Fields shorts set?

They might have to break up the Robeson set since one of the titles is Studio Canal. As for Bruckman maybe they do have the Lloyd library.

Does anybody have any clues or guesses for the Cassavetes title? The whole Five Films box, or just part of it, or something entirely new?

I ask partly because I remember a few years ago seeing something in the news about a lost and significantly different first cut of Shadows being found, and since then I've been wondering if it would warrant an upgraded Shadows release, with high def transfers of both versions (assuming the recently discovered one is real and available).

It means nothing. I just searched the way Minkin did and found this:

pages 4 through 7 go on in a similar fashion. It's just the various directors in their database, with some even repeating. (On page 7, Charlie Chaplin's name comes up again, this time with a 0 by it.)

My guess is that it's a fluke, but if you want to speculate as to the order in which films might be singled out from the Cassavetes box, you might consider the order in which films were singled out from the Cassavetes box:

Any news on Rosi's Moment of Truth? and what about those Hellman westerns? those deserve the mainline treatment! but I'd gladly accept an eclipse set of those and it'd be icing on the cake if they included the Cockfighter with it

My Criterion connection has said they've tried to get the rights to the Hellman westerns and other films by him, but that they're major clearance issues regarding the music rights for his films. Hopefully something will come along to help the issue.

"Love Streams" should be the highest priority right now. A new "Minnie and Moskowitz" that's superior to the long-OOP Anchor Bay version would be welcome as well. I also wouldn't object to his 2 'Hollywood' films ("Too Late Blues" and "A Child Is Waiting") finally getting proper releases. We can upgrade the 5 films that are already out later. :-$

As for Bruckman maybe they do have the Lloyd library.

I know the evidence is that the website thing was not really anything to take as legit clues/leaks, but Harold Lloyd films in the CC wouldn't surprise me too much. Warner would be unlikely to renew the agreement New Line had with the Lloyd estate considering they failed to renew deals with MK2 for Chaplin, CBS for My Fair Lady, and the various Castle Hill films.

It's also worth remembering that Jonathan Turell has blogged about his nostalgic fondness for Lloyd's films:

My knowledge from home made me the official audiovisual person at my elementary school. I was called in to thread the projector whenever the school was showing a film. Occasionally I would bring in a movie. It’s been almost forty years, but I remember like it was yesterday the day I brought in Harold Lloyd’s The Freshman. We showed the movie for the entire fourth, fifth and sixth grades, and for the last twenty minutes—the football game—the entire auditorium was on its feet, screaming. It didn't necessarily make me want to get into the business, but it's an experience that firmly etched into my mind the power of the movies. The Freshman is out as part of the Harold Lloyd collection from New Line. Rent it or buy it, and sit down with lots of people (Lloyd really needs an audience) and enjoy.
